Adnan Yassine is the new chariman of Bourj FC and Mohamad Dakka - the new manager, replacing Hassan Mekdad "Mido"

Adnan Yassine has been elected as the new chairman of Bourj FC. After his election as club president, he thanked the General Assembly and the fans of the team for their support and promised to bring the club back to the summit of Lebanese football. He stressed that his strategy is based on professional management and on the high efficiency of the executive staff in the framework of institutional development and the financial strength of Bourj FC, a brand for which innovative financial resources need to be created in addition to the usual resources of a club that stands on solid ground, supported by its history, principles and values inherited by generations of fans.
Adnan Yassine is a powerful bussinesman, the owner of Arabica Sport, a leader in sports marketing in Lebanon and throughout the Arab world.

Mohamad Dakka has been appointed as the new manager of Bourj FC for the 2018-2019 season by the executive staff of the club. He was the manager of the Lebanese Premier League side Safa SC during the 2017-2018 season and his appointment clearly shows the wish of Bourj FC management to promote to the Premier League as soon as possible. Mohamad Dakka will retain his position as assistant coach of the Lebanon national football team, whose head coach is Miodrag Radulovic.

The previous manager, Hassan Mekdad "Mido", has resigned at the end of March 2018, after four successful years in which Bourj FC promoted from the Fourth Division to the Third Division (in 2015) and then to the Second Division (in 2017). However, the team only classified third and missed the promotion to the Premier League in the last round of the 2017-2018 season of the Second Division, when they disappointingly drew 1-1 at home when they needed to win against fourth-classified Mabarrah, a team that had nothing to gain (or to lose) in the final round. This result was perceived as a failure by many Bourj FC fans although the season was quite a successful one, except for a few unexpected poor results. Hassan Mekdad "Mido" announced several times his intention to resign during the season and his resignation at the end of the season was finally accepted by the administrative staff of Bourj FC.

The Egyptian Second Division (sometimes called Premier League B) represents the second tier in the Egyptian football system and is organized by the Egyptian Football Association. The number of teams has been further reduced for the 2017-2018 season, from 54 teams in 2016-2017 to only 48 teams, divided into 3 groups of 16 teams. The teams have been distributed according to their geographical location: Group A includes the teams from Upper and Middle Egypt, Group B – the teams from Cairo (except one) and the North-East and Group C – the teams from Alexandria and the North-West.
In the previous season, 2016-2017, Group A had only 17 teams (instead of 18) as no team from Upper or Middle Egypt was relegated from the Premier League, while the other two groups had 18 and 19 teams, respectively, and one group included two teams relegated from the Premier League (out of three). This season, however, two teams from Upper Egypt, Aswan and Al Nasr Lel Taa’den, were relegated from the Premier League and they were both included in Group A, therefore compensating the numbers, so that all three groups consisted of 16 teams.
Just like before, the winner of each group gains promotion to the Premier League without any promotion play-offs. However, due to the policy of the Egyptian FA to further reduce the number of teams in the Second Division, five teams from each group will be relegated to the Third Division. The competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds. In Group A, the competition started on the 16th of September 2017 and ended on the 16th of April 2018. Round 15, the last of the first half, was played on the 6th of January 2018 and there was a short break of two weeks before the second half of the season started with round 16, on the 20th of January 2018. Most of the matches were played on Saturdays and the usual kick-off time was 13.30 (local time).
In Group A, the main contenders for promotion were considered to be the two teams which had just been relegated from the Premier League, Aswan and Al Nasr Lel Taa’den. They both had a very strong start in the league. Al Nasr Lel Taa’den won all matches in the first five rounds and had an unbeaten run of 11 games, before losing surprinsingly at home 3-2 to Fayoum in the 12th round. Then the team entered a winless period of several rounds which made them lose contact with the first classified, El Gouna. Aswan also had a very strong first half of the season and they were second, just one point behind El Gouna, at mid-season. However, they lost home 1-0 to El Gouna in the 20th round and after that the results were quite poor. The strongest side in the league therefore proved to be El Gouna, the only team from the Red Sea Governorate (and not from the Nile Valley). Despite the uncertain start, involving 3 draws in the first 5 matches, and the surprising loss at home, 2-1 to Aluminium in the 12th round, El Gouna managed to win 10 out of 15 games in the first half of the season and to be first at mid-season. The second half of the season was even better, the difference between El Gouna and the other contenders increasing steadily. El Gouna were mathematically promoted after the 29th round (second to last), on the 11th of April 2018, when they won 1-0 away to Al Salam Esna, therefore maintaining a difference of 5 points to the second classified, Al Minya, before the last round. Al Minya was the only real contender for El Gouna towards the end of the season, when all other teams abandoned the fight for promotion. Al Minya started badly with a 3-2 loss away to El Gouna in the first round, a few draws and another loss at home to Al Nasr Lel Taa’den in the 7th round, but then they had very good results and they were unbeaten until the last round of the season, finishing second in the classification.
Teams like Beni Suef, Telephonat Beni Suef, Aluminium, Fayoum and Sohag were also credited with some chances for promotion and they usually had good results but were content with a position in the first half or the middle of the classification.
There were in fact more teams involved in the relegation area, as 5 teams (out of 16) were to be relegated at the end of the season. Most teams who had a weak first half of the season were among those to be relegated at the end. Al Madina Al Monawara and Al Salam Esna were the weakest and, despite a few surprising good results, classified on the last two places. Beni Mazar were last after the first half of the season. They had a better second half but were unable to reach more than the 13th place, for which they competed with Qena, a team which started quite well, but ended up being relegated.
Apart from these four teams, whose fate was established long before the competition ended, other three teams fought to avoid relegation (the 12th place) until the last round: Dayrout, Al Walideya and KIMA Aswan. KIMA Aswan was the only team of these three to lose their final match, 4-1 away to Aluminium, and were therefore relegated.

[1] Since November 2017, Fayoum SC have played their home matches at Al Assiouty Sport Stadium in Asyut because of the renovation works carried out at Fayoum Stadium.
[2] Al Salam Esna play their home matches at Luxor Stadium because their stadium in Esna does not meet the minimal standards imposed by the Egyptian FA for the Second Division.
