Cusco FC and Academia Cantolao drew 1-1 in the 10th round of the Peruvian Liga 1

Tuesday, the 8th of September 2020, 1.15 pm local time (6.15 pm UTC), Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, Lima (neutral ground), the 10th round of the Peruvian Liga 1, Apertura (first stage).
Carlos Ramacciotti remains undefeated as head coach of Cusco FC, but this time Academia Cantolao was very close to get all the points of the game, despite the better ball possession and overall game by Cusco. The first half was clearly dominated by Cusco FC, and they had several good opportunities, such as the shot of Rivera from inside the area, saved by Delgado (15'). The biggest chance was however an exceptional shot by Pósito, when the ball hit both side bars before getting back in the field (43').

In the second half, Cantolao was overall the better team, while Cusco seemed to be taken by surprise, as they strengthened the attack by introducing Ramúa, but the defence went through hard times, especially due to the unexpected offensive launched by the likes of Rengifo, Salinas, Tajima and Celi. Academia Cantolao broke the deadlock after a beautiful counterattack, led by Rengifo on the right, who passed back to Salinas, who then opened to Tajima on the left, and the left winger dribbled Toledo and sent the ball to the far post: 0-1 (64'). Cusco FC equalized shortly after, as Núñez committed a foul on Toledo inside the area, and Carando transformed the penalty with considerable strength: 1-1 (71'). Academia Cantolao also had a penalty, as the ball touched Toledo's hand inside the area after a free kick, but Salas wanted to execute in the same style as Carando, and sent the ball above the crossbar (74'). In the final minutes, the game was very open, both teams trying to find the winning goal. Carando's header (after a cross by Ramúa) went above the crossbar, but the biggest chances belonged to Cantolao, missed by subs Tarazona and D'Arrigo - this last one in the stoppage time.
Cusco: Pretel - Toledo, Saravia, Delgado, Céspedes - Chahuaylla (Ramúa 46'), Valenzuela, Atoche - Rivera (Carranza 64'), Mimbela - Pósito (Carando 66'). Head coach: Carlos Ramacciotti.
Cantolao: Delgado - C. Sánchez, Contreras (J. Sánchez 53'), Salas, Núñez (Arana 72') - Rengifo (D'Arrigo 69'), Celi, Salinas, Tajima - Quintero (Solís 53'), Ceballos (Tarazona 70'). Head coach: Hernán Lisi.
Referee: Mike Palomino.
Yellow cards: Céspedes 59' - Contreras 19'.
Cusco FC started the game with a 100% Peruvian team, which is unusual, and with two U21 players in the field, Chahuaylla and Valenzuela, forced by the low number of minutes played so far by young players - for instance none of them was in the field for the match against Alianza Lima. Cusco FC was in control of the game in the first half, and the substitution of Chahuaylla for Ramúa at half time was clearly meant to provide more attacking strength. What came down was that Academia Cantolao also changed plans and played very offensively in the second half, which led to a surprising game, seldom seen in recent times, with both teams concentrated mainly on the offensive and less careful in defence. The problem for Cusco FC seemed to be the quality and number of the subs - Academia Cantolao made all five changes during the second half, and those who entered made a difference, while Cusco made only three changes, and Ramúa, Carando and Carranza were not in their best day, not to mention the fact that other players also seemed in a less favourable shape for this game.
Head coach Carlos Ramacciotti has the difficult task to find the best starting XI for the next game, against Universidad de San Martín, to be played on Monday, the 14th of September, at 11 am local time, on neutral ground, Miguel Grau Stadium in Callao.
