Competition details and format

The Lebanese Premier League, or simply the Lebanese League, represents the top tier of the football system in Lebanon. It is organised by the Lebanese Football Association and 2023-2024 is the 62nd complete season since its establishment in 1934, or the 64th official season as counted by the Lebanese Football Association. This is the first season when VAR has been introduced for certain matches in the play-off and play-out. The competition started earlier than usual, on 4 August 2023, due to the busy schedule of the Lebanon national team. Al Ahed were the defending champions.

The “split” competition format introduced in 2020-2021 was also kept for 2023-2024, involving two stages; however, the second stage is longer this season, as it involves three matches between the teams instead of two. In the first (regular) stage, the established format is a single round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams once, a total of 11 rounds. This stage started on 4 August 2023 and ended on 16 December 2023 with the postponed match between Nejmeh and Al Ahly Nabatieh. It involved several breaks, in the first half of September, throughout most of October and in the second half of November, due to the schedule of the Lebanon national team, and of the Lebanese teams qualified in continental competitions.

After the first stage, there was a winter break which was also a transfer window period.

For the second stage, teams were divided into two groups: the top 6 teams play each other in a triple round robin for the championship title in a play-off group, while the bottom 6 teams play each other in a triple round robin to avoid relegation, in a play-out group. Just like in the previous season, only half of the points earned in the first stage are carried over in the second stage. The points are halved, and then rounded up if necessary. However, the goal difference record is carried over entirely in the second stage. The second stage started in February 2024 and ended on 30 June 2024.

Matches are usually played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and rarely in other days. Some of the matches are also played mid-week, on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, for various reasons. The usual kick-off time is in the afternoon. MTV Lebanon has the broadcasting rights for all the matches of the Lebanese Premier League but they broadcast only some of the matches, through MTV Sports, on different media outlets, including their TV channel, YouTube channel and Facebook. The other matches are broadcasted by the Lebanese FA on their YouTube channel and/or on the FIFA Plus (FIFA +) website.

Matches in the first stage of the season were played according to a drawing of lots. Because of this system, some teams would have a higher number of matches on their home ground than others. However, almost all the matches in the first stage were played on neutral grounds in order to provide a more balanced and equal situation for all the teams.

In the second stage of the season, teams play each other according to the first stage table, in two groups: the top 6 teams are involved in the play-off (championship) group, while the bottom 6 teams are included in the play-out group. Matches in the second stage are scheduled in such a way that the first classified play the last classified in the first round and then with each better classified team, until they play the second classified in the last round. Therefore, the potentially decisive matches are scheduled in the last round.

The champions have the right to play in the AFC Challenge Cup in the next season (2024-2025), along with the runners-up. The third classified usually qualify for the Arab Champions Cup. The Lebanese FA Cup winners are no longer considered to play in any continental or international competition. The last two teams in the classification will be relegated to the Second Division.

The defending champions, Al Ahed, were among the main favourites for the title this year, together with Nejmeh and Ansar. In recent years, these three teams have been the usual contenders for the title. Nejmeh started very strong, with five wins in the first five matches, including one against Al Ahed. However, they lost to Ansar in the last round of the regular season. Al Ahed came back in the second part of the regular season, and the two teams, Nejmeh and Al Ahed finished the first stage on top of the table, with the same number of points. Ansar had the worst start of the three contenders, and finished the regular season in only fourth place, even below Bourj FC, to which they lost.

The other teams were likely to fight for the fourth place at best. Their realistic goal was to classify in the upper half of the table (positions 4 through 6) at the end of the first stage, in order to play the championship play-off and to stay away from relegation as much as possible. Shabab Sahel and Bourj FC were credited with most chances to get a place in the upper half. However, Shabab Sahel had a poor first stage and finished only seventh, outside the play-off. Bourj FC, on the other hand, came in third place at the end of the first stage, outrunning Ansar. Safa had their strongest season lately and succeeded to qualify to the play-off in fifth place, while Racing Beirut surprisingly took the sixth place at the end of the regular season, after a number of good results, including draws against Nejmeh, Bourj, Ansar, and Safa, the latter one in the last round of the regular season, allowing them to qualify to the play-off and to keep Shabab Sahel out of it.

In the first part of play-off, Ansar came back to the upper part of the table, after a series of 4 wins and one draw, lying next to Al Ahed on top of the table. Safa also performed well, challenging Nejmeh for the third place. Nejmeh and Bourj had unexpectedly poor results, dropping into third and fifth place respectively, while Racing remained in sixth. In the second part of the play-off, Al Ahed lost both to Ansar and Nejmeh and draw against Safa, so they dropped into third place, while Ansar won also over Nejmeh and climbed on top of the table, with Nejmeh in second position. Safa remained fourth, Bourj fifth and Racing sixth. Further Al Ahed defeats to Ansar and Bourj meant that the title race remained open only for Ansar and Nejmeh, which won their first four games in the third part of the play-off. Therefore, the title is to be decided in the last round, when the two contenders, Ansar and Nejmeh, will face each other. Before this game, Ansar has 2 points above Nejmeh, meaning they will win the title either with a win or a draw, while Nejmeh need to win to become champions.

The other teams entered the play-out to avoid relegation. Newly-promoted Al Ahly Nabatieh, along with Hikma / Sagesse, Shabab Al-Ghazieh, Tadamon Sour and AC Tripoli were among those expected to be contenders in the fight to avoid relegation. After the first stage, only Shabab Sahel in seventh place seem safer, while the battle to avoid the bottom two places in the play-out would involve mainly Shabab Al-Ghazieh, Tadamon Sour, Al Ahly Nabatieh, AC Tripoli and Hikma / Sagesse. After the first part of the play-out, Hikma / Sagesse and Al Ahly Nabatieh were in relegation position, but all the others were very close: Shabab Al-Ghazieh and AC Tripoli only had one point more than them, while Tadamon Sour had two points more. Tadamon Sour had an excellent winning streak in the second part of the play-out, which led them away from relegation. With one round to go, four teams were still fighting to avoid relegation: AC Tripoli in last place, Hikma / Sagesse second to last, only one point above, Shabab Al-Ghazieh and Al Ahly Nabatieh, two points above Tripoli and just one point above Hikma / Sagesse. In the last round, these four teams played against each other: AC Tripoli faced Shabab Al-Ghazieh, while Hikma / Sagesse faced Al Ahly Nabatieh. Both matches were scheduled on neutral grounds. AC Tripoli and Hikma / Sagesse needed to win to stay in the Premier League, while Shabab Al-Ghazieh and Al Ahly Nabatieh both needed at least a draw to be sure to remain in the Premier League. Hikma / Sagesse won 1-0 over Al Ahly Nabatieh, which allowed them to remain in the Premier League, while Al Ahly Nabatieh were relegated after just one year in the top tier. In the other decisive match, despite their two previous wins which allowed them to hope until the last round, AC Tripoli failed to win once again, drawing 0-0 to Shabab Al-Ghazieh, and were therefore relegated, while Shabab Al-Ghazieh were saved from relegation.

If two or more teams have the same number of points, the results of head-to-head matches between them are the main ranking criteria.

Second stage

Play-off

The top six teams in the regular season start the play-off with their first stage points halved and rounded up, if necessary. If two or more teams have the same number of points, the teams that had their points rounded up will be classified below those which had their points halved neatly, as the main ranking criterion, followed by the head-to-head results, the goal difference, and the number of goals scored. The goal record from the first stage is carried over in the second stage.

The order of the matches is such that the first classified will play the last classified in the first round and then with each better classified team, until they play the second classified in the fifth round. In the second part and third of the play-off, the order of matches remains unchanged, only the location is reversed.

Play-out

The bottom six teams in the regular season start the play-out with their first stage points halved and rounded up, if necessary. If two or more teams have the same number of points, the teams that had their points rounded up will be classified below those which had their points halved neatly, as the main ranking criterion, followed by the head-to-head results, the goal difference, and the number of goals scored. In the second and third part of the play-out, the order of matches remains unchanged, only the location is reversed.
