Competition details and format
The Rwandan Second Division represents the second tier in the Rwandan football system and is organized by the Federation Rwandaise de Football Association (FERWAFA).
The 2025-2026 season involved 24 teams (compared to 26 teams in 2024-2025), which were divided into two groups of 12 teams each, Group A and Group B. However, two teams in group A (Nyagatare FC and Akagera FC) had withdrawn before the start of the season, which left Group A with only 10 teams. Most of the teams had participated in the 2024-2025 season as well, or in previous editions of the Second Division, but there were also two teams relegated from the 2024-2025 Premier League, as well as a few teams promoted from the Third Division or otherwise accepted. The groups were largely made up taking into account a balanced distribution of the teams in terms of value, and the geographical location, as much as possible. The competition started on 11 October 2025 and ended on 16 May 2026.
In each group, every team played every other team twice, once at home, and once away, in a double round robin championship, a total of 22 rounds. Because there were only 10 teams that remained to compete in Group A, in each round two teams received a bye in this group, except for the rounds when the two withdrawn teams were meant to play against each other. The first half of the regular season started on 11 October 2025 and ended on 21 December 2025. After a break, the second half of the regular season started on 17 January 2026 and ended on 31 March 2026. Matches in the second half of the season were played in the same order but in reverse location compared to the first half. The top four classified in each group qualified for the promotion play-offs, compared to the top two classified in the previous seasons. Therefore, the promotion play-offs involved initially a knock-out stage or quarter-finals, in which the top classified of each group played against the fourth classified in the other group, and the second classified of each group played the third classified of the other group, in two legs. The winners of the two legs advanced to the promotion round involving four teams. The promotion round (or play-off) was played in a Final Four format, each team playing every other team twice, once at home and once away, a total of 6 rounds.
The two teams that were relegated from the Premier League, Muhazi United and Vision FC, along with those relegated a year ago, Sunrise FC and Etoile de l’Est, were considered among the favourites for promotion. Muhazi United and Vision FC were distributed in two different groups, but Sunrise FC and Etoile de l’Est were both included in Group B, along with Vision FC. In Group A, Muhazi United were leaders after the first half of the season, but only one point ahead of newly-included Espoir FC and Nkombo FC. La Jeunesse were in fourth place, but Intare FC were just one point behind, with chances to grab a spot for the play-offs. In Group B, Sina Gérard FC finished on top after the first half of the season, 3 points ahead of a group made by Sunrise FC, Etoile de l’Est, and UR Huye, while Unity SC were just two points outside the top four. Vision FC had a poor first half of the season and were classified only eighth.
In the second half of the season, Espoir FC managed to overtake Muhazi United on top of Group A by five points. Intare also had a strong second part of the season and came third, level on points with Muhazi United, while Nkombo FC finished fourth, just one point behind the two. These four teams were much ahead of the others and qualified for the play-offs, as La Jeunesse had a poor second part of the season. In Group B, there was a serious competition for the first place. Eventually, Sunrise FC clinched the top spot, winning the last eight matches of the regular season, only one point ahead of Sina Gérard FC and three points ahead of Etoile de l’Est, which were unbeaten for 20 games at the end of the regular season. Unity SC came fourth, and took the last place for the promotion play-offs, taking advantage of the poor form of UR Huye in the second half of the regular season. Despite a much better second part of the season, Vision FC only classified fifth and missed the play-offs.
In the knock-out stage of the play-offs, or the quarter-finals, teams in Group B outperformed teams in Group A, and surprisingly teams classified third or fourth in their group qualified for the Promotion Round. Sunrise FC were the only top two classified team in any of the groups to advance to the Promotion Round, winning their double-leg encounter against Nkombo FC. The other group leader Espoir FC were unexpectedly eliminated by Unity SC after two draws, based on away goal rules. Another shocker was the elimination of Sina Gérard FC by Intare FC, the only team in Group A which advanced to the Promotion Round. Etoile de l’Est, third classified in Group B, qualified after a strong performance against Muhazi United.
In the play-offs, the battle for the two promotion spots was mainly between Sunrise FC, Etoile de l’Est, and revelation Unity SC. Intare FC did not manage to win a single game, but got in the others’ ways with a few draws. Before the last round, Unity SC needed a win against Intare FC to secure at least the second place, while Etoile de l’Est and Sunrise FC head-to-head match was likely to determine the second team to promote to the Premier League. Sunrise FC won 2-1 away at Etoile de l’Est to secure the top spot, becoming champions of the Second Division and winning promotion to the Premier League after two years in the Second Division. Unity SC eventually drew 0-0 with Intare FC, but that was enough for the second place and an unexpected promotion to the top flight. Nevertheless, Unity SC later informed the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) that they cannot afford the costs to participate in the Premier League. Accordingly, third-placed Etoile de l’Est were promoted instead to the 2026-2027 Rwanda Premier League.
Teams which were eliminated in the quarter-finals participated to a consolation ranking round for the places 5 through 8. Sina Gérard FC won this competition, which took place at the same dates as the promotion round, and therefore classified fifth overall, with Espoir FC, Nkombo FC, and Muhazi United finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.
The teams classified 11th and 12th (last and second-to-last) in each group might have been involved in a play-out championship, to avoid relegation. In Group A, this problem was solved before the competition even started because Akagera FC and Nyagatare FC had withdrawn. In Group B, Aspor FC and Miroplast FC finished at the bottom of the table. However, in recent years, there were no teams relegated to the Third Division. No relegation play-out was eventually played.

Geographical distribution of the teams
Almost half of the teams (11 out of 24) are from the capital city of Kigali or the province of Kigali. They are rather evenly distributed between the two groups (5 in Group A and 6 in Group B). Teams from the other provinces are also split more or less equally across the two groups. 3 out of 5 teams from the Eastern Province are in Group A, while the other two are in Group B. One team from the Southern Province is in Group A, while the other two are in Group B. Two teams from the Western Province are in Group A, while the other one is in Group B. The two teams of the Northern Province are distributed equally, one of them in each group. Therefore both groups have teams from all the provinces.
