Competition details and format

The Gabrovo Regional League (also known as the Gabrovo Oblast Group) sits at the fourth tier in the football pyramid of Bulgaria, along with the other regional leagues which are organized at the level of each Bulgarian province (oblast). Unlike other regional leagues, it consists of only one division, ”A”, which is at the same time the highest and the lowest football level in Gabrovo Province. 2022-2023 was the ninth consecutive season when Gabrovo Regional League was made up of a single division (group). The competition is organized by the regional administrative football zone centre based in Veliko Tarnovo, belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). Boruna Tsareva Livada were the 2021-2022 champions, and they promoted to the Bulgarian Third League.

There were 10 teams which competed in the 2022-2023 Gabrovo Regional League, eight from the 2021-2022 season, one that had newly enrolled, and one (FK Tryavna 1922) which took the place of OFK Tryavna, a club suspended in March 2022 by the Bulgarian Football Union. The competition was organized as a double round robin championship, in which each team played each other team twice, once at home and once away, a total of 18 matches.

The competition started on 18 September 2022, and the first half of the season (rounds 1 to 9) was scheduled in autumn 2022, ending on 20 November 2022. The second half of the season (rounds 10 to 18) started on 26 March 2023 and ended on 10 June 2023 with a postponed match from round 11. Between the two halves of the season, there was a large winter break when transfers were allowed. This was the first season since 2018-2019 that was unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Most matches were usually played on Sunday afternoons.

The winners of the league may be promoted to the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group (Severozapadna Treta Liga) if they meet the standards required for this competition and places are available. If the number of places is lower than the number of teams which apply for promotion, then a promotion play-off may be organized between the winners of the different regional leagues. In recent times, however, the number of places was usually high enough and no play-offs have been played. Moreover, some teams which did not even topped the regional league were invited to fill in the places left in the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group, meaning that even lower classified teams may promote, once they meet the specific standards, involving the existence of junior teams enrolled in national or regional competitions, among others. The 2021-2022 winners of the Gabrovo Regional League, Boruna Tsareva Livada, promoted to the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group, unlike the previous winners, Dan Kolov Sennik (2020-2021) and Balkan Plachkovtsi (2019-2020), which did not apply for promotion.

This season, FK Tryavna 1922 were the main favorites to win the Gabrovo Regional League and to promote to the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group. Their predecessor, OFK Tryavna, were relegated in 2021, and were unable to return to the Third League in 2022 because of the suspension ruled by the BFU. However, Balkan Plachkovtsi and Planinets Kravenik may be strong contenders for the regional title. After the first half of the season, FK Tryavna 1922 were unbeaten and had the lead, 3 points above Balkan Plachkovtsi and 4 points above Planinets Kravenik. In the second half of the season, FK Tryavna 1922 won all the matches and became champions of the Gabrovo Regional League, 12 points ahead of the second classified, Balkan Plachkovtsi. FK Tryavna 1922 are also entitled to promote to the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group (Severozapadna Treta Liga).

Relegation was not an issue, since there is no lower division or league.
