Competition
details and format
The Peruvian First Division (Primera División in Spanish) is the main football competition in
Peru and the top tier of the football system in Peru. Since 2019 it has been
officially called Liga 1 and since
2024 it has become Liga 1 Te Apuesto for
sponsorship reasons. Primera División
is however the generic name and it was the 109th edition under this
name in 2025. Universitario de Deportes are the defending champions.
The number of participants is 19, growing from 18 in
2024, although initially only 17 teams were meant to participate. Second
Division clubs Ayacucho FC and Deportivo Binacional were allowed to participate
after winning legal cases against the Peruvian Football Federation and reached
an agreement to be reinstated. However, on 19 August 2025, the legal decision
was reversed in the case of Deportivo Binacional, and they were immediately excluded
from the competition, and their results in Clausura cancelled. Therefore, the
Apertura involved 19 teams, while the Clausura only 18 teams. The season
started on 7 February 2025, and is expected to end in November or December with
the play-offs.
The competition is organized by the FPF (Federación Peruana de Fútbol – Peruvian
Football Federation) with the help of the ADFP (Asociación Deportiva de Fútbol Profesional – Professional Football
Sports Association). Matches are played mainly in week-ends (Friday to Monday)
and are broadcasted by L1 Max (most matches), Gol Perú (Gol TV outside Peru), Nativa
(only one match in each round), and Fox Deportes (only one match in each round
in the USA), with very few exceptions.
The Peruvian First Division is divided into two
tournaments, Apertura (played in the first half of the year) and Clausura (in
the second half of the year). In the Apertura, all teams play against each
other once (single round-robin). In the Clausura, the teams play once more
against each other (single round-robin), in the same order as in Apertura but
in reversed location. Between the two tournaments there is a short mid-year
break, which is also used as a transfer window. The tournaments are usually followed
by a decisive play-off between the winners of the tournaments and the teams
classified first and second in the aggregate table (if different from the
winners of the tournaments) to establish the champions. In the event that the
same team wins both tournaments, they are crowned champions and no play-off is
played.
The first tournament to be played was the Apertura. The tournament started on 7 February 2025 and ended on 13
July 2025. Universitario de Deportes won the Apertura in the last round,
on 12 July, when they drew 0-0 with Los Chankas, while second classified
Alianza Lima also drew 0-0 away at UTC Cajamarca, and therefore the gap between
the two teams remained 2 points in favour of Universitario. As winners of the
Apertura, Universitario qualify for the play-off semifinals, and they might
qualify directly for the final if they are classified first or second in the
final aggregate table. They also qualify for the next year Copa Libertadores.
The second tournament is the Clausura, which began on 18
July 2025 and is scheduled to end in November 2025. Points earned during
Apertura are not carried over in Clausura. The winners of Clausura have the
same status as the winners of Apertura, so they also qualify for the play-off
semifinals and might qualify directly for the final if they finish first or
second in the aggregate table. The Clausura winners also qualify for the next
year Copa Libertadores. However, if the same team wins both Apertura and
Clausura, then no play-off is played.
The final aggregate
table (Apertura + Clausura) is very
important. Unless the same team wins both Apertura and Clausura, the teams
classified first and second in the aggregate table qualify for the play-off
semifinals even if they did not win either tournament and therefore have a
chance to become national champions. If the teams finishing first or second in
the aggregate table are also the winners of any tournament, they will qualify
directly to the play-off final. The remaining berths for Copa Libertadores
and all teams to participate in the Copa Sudamericana are also established
according to the final ranking of the aggregate table.
The aggregate table also decides the relegation. The three teams with the
worst overall record (classified 17th, 18th, and 19th)
are to be relegated to the Second Division. The first team to be relegated is Deportivo
Binacional, which were excluded from the league on 19 August 2025, based on
a legal decision. Their results in Clausura were cancelled, while their results
in Apertura still count, but their exclusion means an automatic relegation, and
they are bottom of the aggregate table regardless. Two more teams are to be
relegated, and they are likely to be decided only in the final rounds of
Clausura.

Geographical
distribution of teams
Only 4 teams are from the Capital Region – 3 from the
Province of Lima (Universitario de Deportes, Alianza Lima, and Sporting
Cristal) and one from the Province of Callao (Sport Boys). The department of
Cusco has 3 teams (Cienciano, Cusco FC and Deportivo Garcilaso). Three
departments have two teams each: Junín (Sport Huancayo and ADT Tarma), Piura
(Alianza Atlético and Atlético Grau), and Cajamarca (UTC and Comerciantes
Unidos). The other 7 teams come from 7 different departments; therefore, a
total of 12 departments or provinces are represented, the highest ever,
equaling the record set in 2020. Moreover, a majority of 12 teams (out of 19)
play their home games at an altitude above 1000 m, which is the highest-ever
number of teams located at high altitude in a single season of the Peruvian
First Division.

Foreign
players
Each team is allowed a maximum of 6 foreign players in
the squad, who can all play simultaneously in the field. A foreign player can
be replaced in the roster by another foreign player only during the larger
mid-year transfer window. If a foreign player receives Peruvian citizenship
during the course of the year, he would still be counted as a foreign player
throughout that year.
Most foreign players are from South American
countries, especially Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Ecuador. Many
of the foreign players are strikers and are usually among the top goalscorers
of the competition.
Apertura
Apertura is the first tournament of the 2025 Peruvian
First Division (Liga 1 Te Apuesto). It started on 7 February 2025 with the
matches of the first round and ended on
13 July 2025. All teams play against each other once (single
round-robin). Universitario de Deportes won the Apertura in the last
round, on 12 July, when they drew 0-0 with Los Chankas, while second classified
Alianza Lima also drew 0-0 away at UTC Cajamarca, and therefore the gap between
the two teams remained 2 points in favour of Universitario. As winners of the
Apertura, Universitario qualify for the play-off semifinals, and they might
qualify directly for the final if they are classified first or second in the
final aggregate table. They also qualify for the next year Copa Libertadores.

Apertura winners
Rules
for classification: 1) points; 2) goal difference; 3) goals scored; 4)
fair-play (according to the number of red and yellow cards); 5) drawing of
lots.
Clausura
Clausura is the second tournament of the 2025 Peruvian
First Division (Liga 1 Te Apuesto). It started on 18 July 2025 with the matches
of the first round and is scheduled to end
in November 2025. The teams play once more against each other (single
round-robin), in the same order as in Apertura but in reversed location. Points
earned during Apertura are not carried over in Clausura. The winners of
Clausura have the same status as the winners of Apertura, so they also qualify
for the play-off semifinals and might qualify directly for the final if they
finish first or second in the aggregate table. The Clausura winners also
qualify for the next year Copa Libertadores. However, if the same team wins
both Apertura and Clausura, then no play-off is played. Clausura started with
19 teams, but on 19 August 2025 Deportivo Binacional were excluded from the
competition based on a legal decision, and all their results in Clausura were
cancelled, leaving the competition with only 18 teams.
