Competition details and format

The Egyptian Second Division (sometimes called Premier League B) represents the second tier in the Egyptian football system and is organized by the Egyptian Football Association. In view of creating a single group for the 2019-2020 season of the Second Division, the number of teams has been further reduced for the 2018-2019 season, from 48 teams in 2017-2018 to only 42 teams, divided into 3 groups of 14 teams. The teams have been distributed according to their geographical location: Group A includes the teams from Upper and Middle Egypt, as well as one team from Cairo area (Media), Group B – the teams from Cairo and the North-East and Group C – the teams from Alexandria and the North-West.
In the previous season, 2017-2018, Group A had two teams relegated from the Premier League (out of three), Aswan and Al Nasr Lel Taa’den. However, this season, no teams relegated from the Premier League have been included in Group A. To compensate the numbers, four of the promoted teams (out of nine) from the Third Division have been placed in Group A (instead of three), including one from Cairo.
Just like before, the winners of each group gain promotion to the Premier League without any promotion play-offs. However, initially, due to the policy of the Egyptian FA to create a single group in the Second Division, half of the teams (seven out of 14) or even more from each group were to be relegated to the Third Division. This decision was eventually reversed and only four teams had to be relegated from each group. The competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 26 rounds. In Group A, the competition started on the 9th of August 2018 and ended on the 18th of April 2019. Almost all the games were played on Thursdays, in the afternoon.
In Group A, the main contenders for promotion were considered to be the former Premier League teams, Aswan and Al Nasr Lel Taa’den, as well as the runners-up of the last season, Al Minya. Teams like Beni Suef, Telephonat Beni Suef and Aluminium were also credited with some chances for promotion.
At half-season, it became clear that promotion to the Premier League will be decided between Beni Suef, rather surprising leaders, Aswan, the main favourites, and third-placed Al Minya. In the second half of the season, Aswan had a long winning run which made them leaders and the gap to second-placed Beni Suef increased steadily, reaching even 11 points. Al Minya had a weak second half of the season and exited early the fight for promotion, losing even the third place. Aswan were mathematically promoted after round 24, when they won 2-1 away at Al Nasr Lel Taa’den, therefore maintaining a 6-point gap between them and runners-up Beni Suef with two rounds to go and having the advantage of direct matches.
Other four teams in mid-table would fight for survival in the Second Division but became sure of a place in the next year second division when it was announced that only four teams would be relegated: Telephonat Beni Suef, Media, Sohag and Aluminium. Telephonat Beni Suef had a very strong second half of the season and even reached the third place in the table. Similarly, Tahta and Dayrout had a better second half of the season and joined the mid-table group of teams.
On the contrary, Al Nasr Lel Taa’den had a long winless run and became involved in the fight to avoid relegation, competing with other lower table teams like Fayoum and El Tahrir Aswan for one spot in the next year Second Division. The last two classified, Naser Mallawi and Al Walideya, were already sure of relegation with several rounds to go before the end of the season. El Tahrir Aswan joined the group of mathematically relegated teams after round 24, when they were unable to win at home against Aluminium, the game ending in a 1-1 draw. In the last round, both Fayoum and Al Nasr Lel Taa’den won their home matches and finished with the same number of points; according to the results of the direct matches between them, Al Nasr Lel Taa’den were relegated to the Third Division, a rather surprising outcome for a team which started very well and was supposed to be involved in the upper part of the table.
