Competition details and format

The Egyptian Second Division (sometimes called Premier League B) represents the second tier in the Egyptian football system and is organized by the Egyptian Football Association. The 2021-2022 Egyptian Second Division was the 42nd season since its establishment in 1977. The same as in 2020-2021, there were 48 teams, divided into 3 groups of 16 teams each.

The teams were distributed according to their geographical location: Group A included the teams from Upper and Middle Egypt, as well as one team from Cairo area (Media), Group B – the teams from Cairo and the North-East, and Group C – the teams from Alexandria and the North-West.

Same as before, the winners of each group gained promotion to the Premier League without any promotion play-offs. Four teams were relegated to the Third Division from each group. The competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds. In Group A, the competition started on the 2nd of October 2021 and ended on 4 June 2022. Games were played on Saturdays or throughout the week, in the afternoon, and no spectators were usually allowed to attend according to the decision of the Egyptian FA, mainly because of restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Group A, at the beginning of the season, the main contenders for promotion were considered Aswan SC, which had just been relegated from the Premier League, as well as El Minya and Aluminium, which fought for promotion in previous seasons. KIMA Aswan inserted themselves surprisingly among the top teams, as they fought to avoid relegation in the previous season. At half-season, Aswan confirmed the expectations, leading by 4 points ahead of El Minya and KIMA Aswan, and 6 points ahead of Asyut Petroleum that were in fourth position. Aluminium (fifth) were too far away to think of the top spot. In the second half of the season, Aswan SC had an astonishing run, winning eight matches in a row and the gap between them and the second classified constantly increased. In round 26, on 10 May 2022, Aswan won 1-0 over Dayrout at home, while KIMA Aswan only managed a 0-0 draw away at El Badari, therefore the gap between Aswan (top of the table) and KIMA Aswan (second classified) increased to 14 points with 4 games in hand, which meant that Aswan SC were mathematically promoted to the Premier League. Aluminium had an astonishing come-back in the second half of the season, and manage to reach the second place in the end, one point above KIMA Aswan, third. Asyut Petroleum remained fourth, while El Minya dropped into fifth place.

Newly-promoted Al Madina Al Monawara, El Badari, Naser Mallawi, and MS Tamya were initially considered as those that would probably fight to avoid relegation, along with teams such as Media, Telephonat Beni Suef, and Qena. At half-season, El Badari were last in the table, while Qena and Telephonat Beni Suef were right above them and these three teams seemed to be the main candidates for relegation. The place right below the relegation line belonged to Naser Mallawi, but several other teams were very close to that line, including Media and Sohag. In fact, any of the mid-table teams might have become involved in the fight to avoid relegation. Telephonat Beni Suef had a very good second half of the season and got out of the dangerous part of the table, even reaching the upper half of the classification. El Badari and Qena remained last and second to last in the table, further away from the other teams, and were mathematically relegated with four rounds to go. With two rounds to go, six teams fought to avoid the remaining two relegation places. Naser Mallawi were worst classified among them, but managed to win both remaining matches to stay in the Second Division. Surprisingly, Sohag lost 4-1 at home to Telephonat Beni Suef in the second to last round, and they were relegated to the Third Division, despite winning in the last round. Beni Suef drew 0-0 away at Fayoum in the second to last round, and needed to win in the last round at home to stay out of trouble. However, Beni Suef surprisingly lost 1-0 to Aluminium and were also relegated.
