Fayoum SC, unable to get more than one point against Al Madina Al Monawara

Fayoum SC - Al Madina Al Monawara 1-1 (1-0)

Mahmoud Ashraf 21' - Mohamed Alyan 82'.

Saturday, 16 October 2021, 2:30 pm local time (12:30 pm UTC), Alassiouty Sport Resort, Fayoum, Egypt, 3rd round of the Egyptian Second Division, Group A.

Fayoum SC started as favourites in this match against newly-promoted Al Madina Al Monawara, but they were unable to secure a win, despite leading early. In the second half, the visitors pushed hard for an equalizer, which they finally achieved deservedly.

In fact, while Fayoum seemed to be in control of the game, the first really big opportunity was missed by Al Madina Al Monawara. On a break, their striker remained all alone with the goalkeeper, who stopped him irregularly at the edge of the box. The referee saw it as on the line, and gave a penalty for the visitors, and only a yellow card to the goalkeeper Islam Risha, instead of the usual red card. However, the penalty was missed by Mohamed Bakri, as Islam Risha saved (17').

The game turned around in just a few minutes. Mahmoud Ashraf came in (20'), substituting an injured player, and his first touch of the ball went in: a shot from the left side hit the crossbar, and Mahmoud Ashraf was there in the right place, to send the ball in the back of the net: 1-0 (21').

Fayoum SC could have doubled their advantage as they had full control of the game in the first half, but missed several opportunities. The most beautiful action was individual one by Mohamed Abou El-Hajj, and ended with a shot which went slightly wide (42').

The second half started with big opportunities at both ends in the first minutes. Fayoum wanted to increase their advantage, while Al Madina Al Monawara looked for an equalizer. Slowly, Fayoum gave way to the visitors, and tried to play more defensively, while Al Madina Al Monawara intensified their attacks. This proved to be the wrong tactics for the hosts, because chances emerged one after the other for the visitors, and Islam Risha had to make some miraculous saves. The biggest chance for the visitors was a free header from the center of the box, but Islam Risha saved (78').

However, Fayoum's goalkeeper was unable to do anything a few minutes later, when a pass from the right side reached one Mohamed Alyan right in front of the goal, and he only had to direct properly into the net: 1-1 (82').

The final minutes were rather chaotic. Fayoum tried to come back into the game, but the visitors also pushed for a late win. Eventually both teams had to accept the draw, which looked like a reasonable result given the circumstances.
