Competition details and format

The Lebanese Premier League, or simply the Lebanese League, represents the top tier of the football system in Lebanon. It is organised by the Lebanese Football Association and 2022-2023 was the 61st complete season since its establishment in 1934, or the 63rd official season as counted by the Lebanese Football Association. The competition started on 2 September 2022. Al Ahed successfully defended their title by winning over Ansar in the last match of the season, and therefore winning their ninth title overall.

The “split” competition format of the previous season was also kept for 2022-2023, involving two stages. In the first (regular) stage, the established format was a single round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams once, a total of 11 rounds. This stage started on 2 September 2022 and ended on 12 December 2022. It involved a small break at the end of September and a larger break throughout most of November due to the schedule of the Lebanon national team.

After the first stage, there was a winter break which was also a transfer window period.

For the second stage, teams were divided into two groups: the top 6 teams played each other twice for the championship title in a play-off group, while the bottom 6 teams played each other twice to avoid relegation, in a play-out group. Contrary to the previous season, only half of the points earned in the first stage were carried over in the second stage. The points were halved, and then rounded up if necessary. However, the goal difference record was carried over entirely in the second stage. The second stage started on 6 January 2023 and ended on 12 March 2023.

Matches were usually played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and rarely in other days. Some of the matches were also played mid-week, on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, for various reasons. The usual kick-off time was in the afternoon. MTV Lebanon had the broadcasting rights for all the matches of the Lebanese Premier League but they broadcasted only some of the matches, through MTV Sports, on different media outlets, including their TV channel, YouTube channel and Facebook. The other matches were broadcasted by the Lebanon FA on their YouTube channel, and in the second stage on the FIFA Plus channel.

Matches in the first stage of the season were played according to a drawing of lots. Because of this system, some teams had a higher number of matches on their home ground than others. However, the location of some of the matches was changed in order to provide a more balanced and equal situation for all the teams, and therefore some of the matches were played on neutral grounds. In fact, only a few teams used their own ground for their home matches, and most of the teams (especially those in Beirut) could not use their home grounds and instead played their home matches at designated stadiums in and around Beirut. Most of the matches involving top teams, especially in the second stage of the season, were played at Fouad Chehab Stadium in Jounieh.

In the second stage of the season, teams played each other according to the table after the first stage, in two groups: the top 6 teams were involved in the play-off (championship) group, while the bottom 6 teams were included in the play-out group. Matches in the second stage were scheduled in such a way that the first classified played the last classified in the first round and then with each team upper classified in the table, until they played the second classified in the last round. Therefore, the potentially decisive matches were scheduled in the last round.

The champions have the right to play in the AFC Champions League in the next season (2023-2024) if they meet the criteria set by the AFC. If so, the runners-up and the third classified will have the right to participate in the next year AFC Cup. However, due to the ongoing economic problems in Lebanon, it is most likely that the champions will only play in the AFC Cup, along with the runners-up. The Lebanese FA Cup winners are no longer considered to play in the AFC Cup. The last two teams in the classification will be relegated to the Second Division.

The defending champions, Al Ahed, were among the main favourites for the title this year, together with Nejmeh and Ansar. In recent years, these three teams have been the usual contenders for the title.

The other teams were likely to fight for the fourth place at best. Their realistic goal was to classify in the upper half of the table (positions 4 through 6) at the end of the first stage, in order to play the championship play-off and to stay away from relegation as much as possible. Shabab Sahel and Bourj FC were credited with most chances to get a place in the upper half, and even in the top three.

At the end of the regular season, Ansar were in lead with only two points above Shabab Sahel and three points above Al Ahed. Nejmeh and Bourj were also very close, only four points away from the leaders. Newly-promoted Shabab Al-Ghazieh were the surprising sixth team to make it to the play-offs, with a 3-0 win in the last round of the regular season over Al Akhaa Al Ahly Aley, to outrun both Safa and Tadamon Sour, which were held to unexpected draws on their home grounds.

The other six teams entered the play-out to avoid relegation. At the end of the regular season, AC Tripoli were in last place, failing to win a single match in the first stage (but this changed in the play-out). Only two points above them, Hikma / Sagesse, Salam Zgharta, and Al Akhaa Al Ahly Aley were among those expected to be contenders in the fight to avoid relegation. Tadamon Sour and Safa were considered to be the stronger teams in the play-out, but they could be easily dragged down to relegation places by a few poorer results (which in fact happened to Safa).

After the first half of the play-off, Ansar retained their two-point gap over the second classified, Al Ahed, and they were four points ahead of Nejmeh. Shabab Sahel and Bourj were already far behind, fighting for the fourth place. In the second to last round, Ansar lost their first match of the season, 3-2 to Nejmeh, and Al Ahed took the lead in the table, with one point above Ansar before the final round in which the two top teams faced each other in the decisive match for the title. Al Ahed only needed a draw to defend their title, while Ansar needed to win. The play was suspended in stoppage time, when Al Ahed was leading 3-2 and were virtual champions, due to incidents caused by some Ansar fans. The match was not resumed, and the Lebanese FA awarded the match 3-0 to Al Ahed, which therefore won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Nejmeh finished second and Ansar third.

In the play-out, AC Tripoli and Tadamon Sour had excellent results, departing from the dangerous area after the first half of the play-out. At the opposite end, Al Akhaa Al Ahly Aley and Salam Zgharta were classified on the last two places, four points behind Hikma / Sagesse and Safa. However, the gap became smaller and before the decisive last round of the season, the four teams were all within two points. Hikma / Sagesse and Safa, playing at home, only needed a draw to remain in the Premier League, while their opponents, Al Akhaa Al Ahly Aley and Salam Zgharta, needed to win to avoid relegation. However, neither Al Akhaa Al Ahly Aley, nor Salam Zgharta succeeded to win their last match and were therefore relegated to the Second Division, while Hikma / Sagesse and Safa remained in the Premier League for the 2023-2024 season.

If two or more teams have the same number of points, the results of head-to-head matches between them are the main ranking criteria.

Second stage

Play-off

The top six teams in the regular season started the play-off with their first stage points halved and rounded up, if necessary. If two or more teams have the same number of points, the teams that had their points rounded up will be classified below those which had their points halved neatly, as the main ranking criterion, followed by the head-to-head results, the goal difference, and the number of goals scored. The goal record from the first stage was carried over in the second stage.

The order of the matches was such that the first classified will play the last classified in the first round and then will play against each upper classified team, until they play the second classified in the fifth round. The same was true for the second half of the play-off, when the schedule was once again changed to have the toughest matches in the last round.
