Bourj FC missed promotion to the Lebanese Premier League as they dissapointingly drew 1-1 in the last round

Bourj FC had a great opportunity to achieve promotion to the Lebanese Premier League. In the last round of the Lebanese Second Division, they needed to win the last match at home against fourth-placed Mabarrah, a team which had nothing to gain (or to lose). However, tension was high among the three top clubs in the division, for which promotion was in reach.

On Saturday, at 14.15 local time, Shabab Sahel played against Shabab Al-Ghazieh in the other decisive match for promotion. At the same time, Bourj played against Mabarrah, officially at home, but practically on Al Ahed Stadium and behind closed doors due to a penalty imposed by the Lebanese Football Association.

If Bourj had won, they would have been mathematically promoted regardless of the result in the other match. However, despite the high stakes which should have motivated the players, they were only able to secure a 1-1 draw.

This result would have been enough only if Shabab Sahel did not win the other game. Nevertheless, this has not happened, as Shabab Sahel won 2-1 to become champions of the Second Division and achieve a come back to the Lebanese Premier League after just one year spent in the Second Division. Despite losing, Shabab Al Ghazieh benefited from the poor result of Bourj FC and promoted as well, as second-classified.

In the final classification of the Lebanese Second Division, Shabab Sahel finished on top with 50 points, followed by Shabab Al-Ghazieh - 49 points, Bourj - 48 points and Mabarrah - 38 points. Full classification and details of the 2017-2018 Lebanese Second Division is available here.

Bourj FC will promote to the Lebanese Premier League after 15 years if they win on Saturday

Bourj FC have the great opportunity to achieve a much-desired promotion to the Lebanese Premier League if they win the match against fourth-placed Mabarrah in the last round of the Second Division on Saturday. The game will kick-off at 14.15 local time, at Safa Stadium in Beirut.

At the same time, Shabab Sahel will play at home against Shabab al-Ghazieh in the other decisive match for promotion. The winner of this game will be sure of a place in the Premier League next year, while a draw is in the advantage of Shabab Al-Ghazieh, who are now leaders of the Second Division with 49 points, followed by Bourj and Shabab Sahel, both with 47 points.

Regardless of the results, this season of the Lebanese Second Division is one of the most exciting in history, as the first three classified teams are all within two points and have a good chance at achieving promotion before the last round. Unfortunately, only two of them will play in the Lebanese Premier League in autumn.

Historical videos

This section covers the period of the 1990s and the first years of the 2000s, when Bourj FC had their best results. They promoted in the Lebanese Premier League in 1991 and won the Lebanese FA Cup in 1993. Their best result in the league was the third place which they achieved at the end of the 1995-1996 season. After 8 years in the Premier League, Bourj FC were relegated at the end of the 1998-1999 season to the Second Division but they achieved promotion again in 2001, if only for 2 years. In 2003, they were relegated again to the Second Division. Videos in this section present highlights mainly from some of the matches in the Lebanese Premier League where they spent 10 seasons (1991-1999 and 2001-2003) and the FA Cup final. The Lebanese Second Division represents the second tier of the football system in Lebanon. It is organised by the Lebanese Football Association. Just like before, the 2017-2018 season comprised only one pool (group) involving 12 teams, of which 8 teams came from the previous season of the Second Division, 2 teams were relegated from the Lebanese Premier League (or First Division)  and 2 teams were promoted from the Third Division.

The competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 22 rounds. The competition started on the 15^th of September 2017 and ended on the 18^th of March 2018. Round 11, the last of the first half, was played in the week-end between the 8^th and 10^th of December 2017. There was a winter break after the first half of the season, around Christmas and the New Year. Round 12, the first of the second half of the season, was played in the week-end between the 5^th and the 7^th of January 2018. The last round, 22, was played on the 17^th and 18^th of March 2018.

Most of the matches were played on Saturdays and Sundays, sometimes on Fridays and rarely on Mondays. The usual kick-off time was 14.15 (local time).

At the end of the season, the first two teams in the classification gained promotion to the Lebanese Premier League (First Division) while the last two in the classification were relegated to the Third Division.

As the season developed, it became clear that three teams will try to achieve promotion: Shabab Sahel, just relegated from the Premier League, Shabab Al-Ghazieh, third classified at the end of the previous season, and Bourj, promoted from the Third Division. These teams dominated the competition and the direct macthes between them, scheduled in the last three rounds, could determine the two teams promoted to the Premier League. The promoted teams were established only after the games in the last round, as top three teams were separated by only 2 points before that. Eventually, Shabab Sahel won the derby against Shabab Al-Ghazieh in the final round, became the winners of the competition and returned to the Premier League after only one year in the Second Division. Shabab Al-Ghazieh also promoted as second in the table, benefitting from the surprising result in the match involving Bourj, which were held to a draw at home by Mabarrah, and only finished third, one point away from promotion.

At the bottom of the table, Amal Maarka and Shabab Majdal Anjar looked as the weakest teams right from the start and were placed on the relagation positions in the classification from the first rounds. Their distance to the tenth classified, usually Hikma / La Sagesse or Homenetmen, increased steadily throughout the season, which made them clear candidates for relegation to the Third Division. Mathematically, they were relegated only after round 21 (second to last), when Hikma / La Sagesse won 2-0 away at Shabab Majdal Anjar and kept a 5-point difference to Amal Maarka, while increasing the distance to Shabab Majdal Anjar to 8 points before the last round.
