Despite being the main favorites to win the Svidník League after they withdrew from the 4th League and were relegated to the lowest existing tier, 1. FK Svidník struggle even in this local Svidník League where they compete against teams from the nearby villages. The town is unable to have a better team than the surrounding villages, that's the conclusion after the first half of the season, and they are classified only sixth (exactly mid-table, out of 11 teams) after 10 games, of which they only won 4, drew 5 and lost one.

The home game against Topl'an Kalnište (which were leaders before the game) was not too different from the others they played against teams classified in the upper half of the table, and 1. FK Svidník had to be content with a draw, although they could have actually won the game if we look at the last 10 minutes, but they could have also lost it, if one takes into account the big opportunities the visitors had throughout the whole match.

It started pretty badly for Svidník, because the visitors scored early, by means of Damián Horbaj: 0-1 (6'). The equalizer came rather quickly, as Tomáš Klučár scored for the home side: 1-1 (15'). Topl'an Kalnište had however the upper hand for large portions of this game, and they were once again in lead after a beautiful goal scored by Jozef Cauner: 1-2 (35').

The second half was very much disputed. 1. FK Svidník tried to equalize, but their chances were few, as their game was mainly based on long passes above the opposite defense, which rarely reached the strikers, and on set pieces which seldom gave any result. On the other hand, the visitors could have increased their advantage, missing two important chances, after swift counterattacks (61' and 72').

In the final minutes, both teams looked to score the winning goal, to no avail. The home side was closer to win the game, as they pushed harder. They also benefitted from two consecutive rough tackles by Jozef Cauner (Kalnište), in 87' and 89', for which he received two consecutive yellow cards, and therefore he was sent off (89'), so Svidník had the numerical advantage in stoppage time. Tobias Frederik Cina missed the biggest chance for Svidník (90'+3'), all alone with goalkeeper L'uboš Varganin, whose save was decisive for the final result of the game: 2-2.

The second half of the season is scheduled in spring 2026. Until then, hopefully the Svidník team will be reinforced, as they are only 5 points away from the top of the table, and they still have some chances for promotion, despite being classified sixth.

1. FK Svidník withdrew in March 2025 from the 4th League - East Group due to financial reasons, in a moment when they were anyway close to relegation, but the rules of the Slovak Football Federation involve that a team that withdraws from the competition after the season started would be relegated to the lowest possible league. So, instead of playing in the 5th League at worst (if relegated), 1. FK Svidník will now have to play in the lowest league available for them, which is the 7th League - Svidník area. Luckily for them, the Svidník local FA only organizes this league, because in other parts of Slovakia there is also an 8th League, so they would have started even from a lower tier than this. This is a shame, generally speaking, but it is even a bigger shame for a club like Svidník, which was supposed to celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. What an anniversary! If there is something to celebrate, it is the fact that the club still exists and was enrolled in a senior competition, be it the lowest available.

It looks like the financial issues are no longer posing a threat at this level, hopefully. One would believe that a club like 1. FK Svidník would have no problem in winning the 7th League, after spending most of the last 50 years in the 3rd and 4th League in either Czechoslovakia or Slovakia, even if they play with their youth team. Nonetheless, for the other teams in this league is an unexpected honour to play official games against 1. FK Svidník, and they will probably fight for a good result, to make them proud. Well, they might be even accustomed with this kind of honourable opponents, because last year it was the turn of another ”giant” to play in exactly the same league, MFK Slovan Giraltovce. They won it however, and they now play in the 6th League; will 1. FK Svidník be able to do the same?

Judging from the start, it is yet too early to say, but the start is not promising. 1. FK Svidník got only a 1-1 draw away at Tisinec, not the best team in the league. Svidník took the lead in the first half by means of Tobias Frederik Cena (27') and could have easily extended their lead, but Dávid Petrik missed a penalty (35').

In the second half, the home side fought hard for an equalizer and they eventually succeeded to score, by means of Miloš Čepa (67'). In the final minutes, both teams looked for the winning goal, but neither scored.

1. FK Svidník withdrew from the Slovak Fourth League (East Group) may start from the lowest level in autumn

Football in Svidník is over, at least at senior level, because 1. FK Svidník withdrew from the Slovak Fourth League (East Group). They were second to last (15th) in the table after the first part of the season, accumulating only 10 points (3 wins, 1 draw, and 13 defeats), which meant that they were in danger of relegation to the Fifth League anyway. Problems arrived some time ago, and, after 9 years competing in the Third League (2015-2024), the team was relegated to the Fourth League at the end of the 2023-2024 season. 

Relegation brought nothing good, as most of the players left, and almost an entire new team had to be structured to play in the Fourth League. Results were poor, as mentioned. Sponsors were not sufficient, players were not paid all their salaries. The whole winter brought no solutions. Lukás Hricov and Noro Sališ were interested in taking over the club, under several conditions (including a renaming of the club), but the current president Michal Goriščák did not agree to sell. It all came down to a meeting of the Svidník Town Council, where 37,700 Euro were agreed to subisidize the club. However, 20,000 Euro were meant for the youth teams, and only 17,700 to the senior team, which was far below the 75,000 Euro asked by president Michal Goriščák. 

1. FK Svidník postponed their matches against Spartak Medzev and Kežmarok scheduled in March, but no miracle happened and eventually they had to withdraw from the competition. All their previous results were cancelled.

The youth teams will continue however in their respective competitions.

The senior team will be only allowed to enroll in the lowest league in autumn (the Slovak Seventh League), if they wish to come back to any competition. By then, some things may change. It is also possible that a new club will be born in Svidník.

The situation is very sad, taking into account that this year is the anniversary of a 100 years of football in Svidník. The first club, ŠK Svidník, was established in 1925. Throughout these 100 years, the club went through some name changes, but it always represented the town of Svidník. This spring, the town of Svidník no longer has a senior football team.

Competition details and format

 

The Slovak Fourth League, or 4. Liga (in Slovak), also officially named IV. Liga, represents the fourth tier in the football system of Slovakia. The 2024-2025 season is the 32^nd since Slovakia separated from the Czech Republic to become an independent state in 1993, and the third one in which the Fourth League became the highest league organized by the regional football associations, consisting of four groups (East, Central, West and Bratislava), after a major reorganization which had taken place in 2022. The season started on 27 July 2024 and is scheduled to end on 15 June 2025.

There are 63 teams competing in the Fourth League in 2024-2025, almost equally divided into the 4 geographical groups: East (Východ, 16 teams), Central (Stred, 14 teams), West (Západ, 17 teams) and Bratislava (16 teams). The competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds in the groups of 16 teams. The winners of every group promote to the Third League (3. Liga), and sometimes the second classified may be promoted as well (especially in the East Group), while the bottom classified team(s) (the last or the last two) are relegated to the Fifth League (4. Liga) at the end of the season. They are to be replaced by teams relegated from the Third League and teams promoted from the Fifth League.

Matches in the Fourth League groups are organized by the respective regional football associations. The East (Východ) group is organized by the Eastern Slovak Football Association (Východoslovenský Futbalový Zväz) and consists of teams located in Prešov and Košice regions in the eastern part of Slovakia. The season is divided into two unequal parts, separated by a large winter break, which was also a transfer window period. The first part of the season (including 17 rounds) started on 27 July 2024 and ended on 10 November 2024, while the second part of the season (including the remaining 13 rounds) is scheduled to start on 22 March 2025 and to end on 15 June 2025. Matches are played mostly on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, while very few rounds are scheduled mid-week.

The main contenders for promotion are MFK Spartak Medzev and 1. MFK Kežmarok, which started very well, and were classified first and second after the first part of the season. MFK Spartak Medzev had a very good start of the season, with 15 wins in the first 17 matches. At winter break, they were 9 points ahead of 1. MFK Kežmarok in second place. In their turn, 1. MFK Kežmarok were 5 points ahead of MFK Slovan Sabinov in third place and 6 points from the fourth classified, newly-promoted MFK Rožňava. FK Gerlachov, OFK-SIM Raslavice and FK Čaňa are also within reach of the third place. These teams will be likely involved in the fight for promotion. While the top spot of MFK Spartak Medzev seems almost impossible to challenge, there might be an interesting battle for the second place, which may as well lead to promotion to the Third League, as it has happened in every year since 2022 in the East Group.

MŠK Spartak Medzilaborce, 1. FK Svidník, OŠK Rudňany and OŠK Pavlovce nad Uhom are the teams most likely to be involved in the fight to avoid relegation. In this season, due to certain circumstances related to the low number of teams in the Third League – East Group and in the Second League, it is possible that only one team will be relegated. At winter break, MŠK Spartak Medzilaborce were last, winning only one game out of 17, and were 4 points behind 1. FK Svidník, which have just been relegated from the Third League, 7 points behind OŠK Rudňany and 10 points behind OŠK Pavlovce nad Uhom. In the second part of the season, these teams will fight for survival in the Fourth League.
