Competition details and format

The Peruvian First Division (Primera División in Spanish) is the main football competition in Peru and the top tier of the football system in Peru. Since 2019 it has been officially called Liga 1 and in 2024 it has become Liga 1 Te Apuesto for sponsorship reasons. Primera División is however the generic name and it was the 108th edition under this name in 2024. Universitario de Deportes successfully defended their title, by winning both the Apertura and the Clausura in the year when they celebrate 100 years of existence. This was their 28th title overall and the second one in a row.

The number of participants was 18, reduced from 19 in 2023. This was the first season when VAR was used throughout the entire competition. The season started on 26 January 2024, and ended with the last round of Clausura on 3 November 2024. No play-off was played, because Universitario de Deportes won both tournaments, Apertura and Clausura.

The competition was organized by the FPF (Federación Peruana de Fútbol – Peruvian Football Federation) with the help of the ADFP (Asociación Deportiva de Fútbol Profesional – Professional Football Sports Association). Matches were played mainly in week-ends (Friday to Monday) and were broadcasted by L1 Max, Gol Perú (Gol TV) and Nativa with very few exceptions.

The Peruvian First Division is divided into two tournaments, Apertura (played in the first half of the year) and Clausura (in the second half of the year). In the Apertura, all teams play against each other once (single round-robin). In the Clausura, the teams play once more against each other (single round-robin), in the same order as in Apertura but in reversed location. Between the two tournaments there is a short mid-year break, which is also used as a transfer window. The tournaments are usually followed by a decisive play-off between the winners of the tournaments and the teams classified first and second in the aggregate table (if different from the winners of the tournaments) to establish the champions. In the event that the same team wins both tournaments, they are crowned champions and no play-off is played. This was the case in 2024, when Universitario de Deportes won both tournaments and became champions.

The first tournament to be played was the Apertura. The tournament started on 26 January 2024 with the matches of the first round and ended on 27 May 2024. Universitario de Deportes won the Apertura in the last round, on 25 May, when they won 4-0 at home over Los Chankas, therefore achieving a better goal difference than Sporting Cristal, which played at the same time and only won 1-0 away to Comerciantes Unidos. The two teams were equal in terms of points, but Universitario de Deportes had a better goal difference by only one goal, +25 compared to +24 for Sporting Cristal. As winners of the Apertura, Universitario de Deportes qualified for the play-off semifinals if they are among the top seven in the final aggregate table, and they might qualify directly for the final if they are classified first or second in the final aggregate table. They also qualify for the next year Copa Libertadores.

The second tournament was the Clausura, which began on 12 July 2024 and ended on 3 November 2024. Points earned during Apertura were not carried over in Clausura. The winners of Clausura have the same status as the winners of Apertura, so they also qualify for the play-off semifinals if they are among the top seven in the final aggregate table and might qualify directly for the final if they finish first or second in the aggregate table. The Clausura winners also qualify for the next year Copa Libertadores. However, if the same team wins both Apertura and Clausura, then no play-off is played. Before the last round, Alianza Lima had the same number of points as Universitario, but had a poorer goal difference, so they needed a better result than Universitario in the last round to win the Clausura or a very unlikely win by a huge goal difference. Universitario de Deportes, the winners of Apertura, also won the Clausura on 3 November 2024, by drawing 0-0 away at Los Chankas, while Alianza Lima lost 2-1 at home to Cusco FC, and remained in second place, one point behind Universitario de Deportes. As a result, Universitario de Deportes became national champions by winning both Apertura and Clausura.

The final aggregate table (Apertura + Clausura) is very important. Unless the same team wins both Apertura and Clausura, the teams classified first and second in the aggregate table would have qualified for the play-off semifinals even if they did not win either tournament and therefore have a chance to become national champions. If the teams finishing first or second in the aggregate table are also the winners of any tournament, they will qualify directly to the play-off final. On 27 October 2024, in round 16 of Clausura, by winning 3-1 over Cienciano at home, Universitario de Deportes were mathematically sure of the first place in the aggregate place, as they maintained a 5-point gap to the second place, Sporting Cristal, and a 7-point gap over FBC Melgar and Alianza Lima, with one round to go. Therefore, they were sure to qualify in the play-off final, in case they did not win the Clausura. On 3 November 2024, by winning 3-0 at home over Comerciantes Unidos, Sporting Cristal were sure of the second place in the aggregate table. However, they needed Alianza Lima to win the Clausura in order to qualify to the play-off semifinals. A few hours later, Universitario de Deportes won the Clausura, and Sporting Cristal’s second place meant only that they qualify directly to the group stage of Copa Libertadores. The remaining berths for Copa Libertadores and all teams to participate in the Copa Sudamericana are also established according to the final ranking of the aggregate table. Therefore, FBC Melgar (third place) and Alianza Lima (fourth place) qualified for the second stage and first stage of Copa Libertadores, respectively. They were mathematically in the final top four of the aggregate table since 25 October, when Cusco FC (fifth place) lost 4-1 away at Carlos A. Mannucci. Before the last round, FBC Melgar and Alianza Lima had the same number of points and even the same goal difference, but in the last round of Clausura FBC Melgar drew 1-1 with Deportivo Garcilaso, which was enough to get the third place, because Alianza Lima lost 2-1 at home to Cusco FC.

Cusco FC classified fifth, Cienciano sixth, Atlético Grau seventh, and ADT Tarma eighth, so they all qualified for the next year Copa Sudamericana. They were all sure of their qualification with some time to go before the end of the season, as the gap between them and the ninth classified (Alianza Atlético) was rather large. With one round to go, the gap was five points and all teams classified fifth through eight were sure of being qualified to Copa Sudamericana. Cusco FC have been already sure of the fifth place, it only remained to be decided which of the other three teams will be sixth, seventh and eighth. They all won in the last round, so the classification remained unchanged.

The aggregate table also decides the relegation. The three teams with the worst overall record (classified 16th, 17th, and 18th) were relegated to the Second Division. Unión Comercio had a very poor season and they were mathematically relegated on 27 September 2024, when they lost 2-0 at home to Sport Boys in round 13 of Clausura, and the gap between them and the first team above the relegation line was 15 points with 4 rounds to go. Afterwards, although they won the next one home match, 3-2 over Comerciantes Unidos, they recorded very tough defeats, including a historical 12-0 defeat at home to Sporting Cristal, finishing last. The other teams involved in the fight to avoid relegation were Carlos A. Mannucci, Universidad César Vallejo, Universidad Técnica de Cajamarca (UTC), Sport Boys, Deportivo Garcilaso, Comerciantes Unidos, Sport Huancayo, Los Chankas, and Alianza Atlético. Alianza Atlético had a very good Clausura and succeeded to get out of the trouble early, and soon some of the others followed. Carlos A. Mannucci seemed to be the second team to be relegated, but they had an unexpected winning streak of two games in rounds 15 and 16 of Clausura, including a 2-0 away win over their local archrivals Universidad César Vallejo, in round 16. With one round to go, only Universidad Técnica de Cajamarca, Carlos A. Mannucci, and Universidad César Vallejo remained in the battle to avoid the two relegation spots, all having the same number of points. Universidad César Vallejo had a slightly better goal difference than UTC but they had the most difficult match, away at Atlético Grau. They lost 3-1 and were relegated. Both UTC and Carlos A. Mannucci played at home and needed to win to secure their stay in Liga 1. Carlos A. Mannucci had the worst goal difference by far and only succeeded a 2-2 draw at home with Alianza Atlético, although they led 2-0 at a certain moment, and were relegated on goal difference. Universidad Técnica de Cajamarca also got a draw, 1-1 with Sport Huancayo, which was eventually enough for them to be saved, on goal difference.

Foreign players

Each team is allowed a maximum of 6 foreign players in the squad, who can all play simultaneously in the field. A foreign player can be replaced in the roster by another foreign player only during the larger mid-year transfer window. If a foreign player receives Peruvian citizenship during the course of the year, he would still be counted as a foreign player throughout that year.

Most foreign players are from South American countries, especially Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Ecuador. Many of the foreign players are strikers and are usually among the top goalscorers of the competition.

Apertura

Apertura was the first tournament of the 2024 Peruvian First Division (Liga 1 Te Apuesto). It started on 26 January 2024 with the matches of the first round and ended on 27 May 2024. All teams played against each other once (single round-robin). Defending champions Universitario de Deportes won the Apertura in the last round, on 25 May, when they won 4-0 at home over Los Chankas, therefore achieving a better goal difference than Sporting Cristal, which played at the same time and only won 1-0 away to Comerciantes Unidos. The two teams were equal in terms of points, but Universitario de Deportes had a better goal difference by only one goal, +25 for Universitario compared to +24 for Sporting Cristal.

[1] Alianza Lima played their home games at Nacional Stadium in Lima during the Apertura because they received a 7-month ban to use their usual home ground, Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, due to incidents at the end of the second leg of the 2023 final.

[2] Atlético Grau played their home games at the Campeones del 36 Stadium in Sullana because of the works carried out at their own stadium, Miguel Grau in Piura.

[3] UTC Cajamarca played their home games at Germán Contreras Jara in Cajabamba because their usual home ground, Héroes de San Ramón Stadium in Cajamarca, did not meet the FPF requirements.
