First win for Fayoum SC after four consecutive defeats and a managerial change

Fayoum SC - Asyut Cement 1-0 (1-0)

Mostafa Shafik 38'

Friday, 3 March 2023, 3 pm local time (1 pm UTC), Alassiouty Sports Resort, Fayoum, Egypt, 20th round of the Egyptian Second Division, Group A.

Fayoum SC started awfully the second half of the season, with four consecutive defeats. The first two defeats, 2-1 away at Shoban Moslemen Qena, and 1-0 at home to El Gouna, were fatal to manager Khaled Eino, who was sacked shortly after round 17. New manager Ahmed Farouk started badly, with two more defeats, 3-0 at home to Al Nasr Lel Taa'den and 1-0 away to Telephonat Beni Suef.

After such a negative streak, there was no wonder that there was a lot of determination within Fayoum squad to win over Asyut Cement in round 20. One must also notice that Fayoum won their first match of the season away exactly at Asyut Cement; and the first win of the second half of the season came against the same opponent, this time at home. One may say that Asyut Cement, although better classified than Fayoum, seem to be easier to defeat than other teams, at least from the perspective of Fayoum SC.

The match was heavily disputed, with both teams fighting over control in the midfield. The only goal of the game was scored late in the first half. Fayoum goalkeeper, Mohamad Kandil, sent a long ball towards the opposite box, Fayoum forwards succeeded to take possession of the ball, and a cross from the left side in front of the goal reached Mostafa Shafik at the far post, who sent it home despite the opposition of a defender: 1-0 (38').

The visitors tried to respond, especially in the second half, when their attacks intensified. Mohamad Saeed missed a penalty for Asyut Cement (53'), the biggest opportunity for them.

Fayoum SC players and staff needed this win to get out of the dangerous area of the classification. In the next round, they will play away at El Minya, while Asyut Cement will face Al Nasr Lel Taa'den at home.
