Argentinian Miguel Rondelli is the new manager of Cusco FC for 2024

After a disappointing end of the 2023 season, it was obvious that Cusco FC is in search for a new manager. Luis Flores acted mainly as interim manager since September 2023, for the remaining six rounds of the 2023 season, after Pablo Peirano was sacked due to the bad results in Clausura. Nevertheless, the results were even worse under Luis Flores, and Cusco FC missed (by one point) the participation in Copa Sudamericana, classifying only ninth in the aggregate table, after finishing fourth in Apertura. There were a number of reasons for this decline in the second half of 2023, and perhaps not all of them were made public. However, Luis Flores was not to be kept as manager, despite the fact that the players themselves were probably guilty as well, especially those who were absent for the last (decisive) game away at Universidad César Vallejo. Most of the players also left in the meantime, so Cusco FC will have to build up a team almost from the scratch.

Several names were discussed, and a return of Freddy "Petróleo" García was presented as almost sure by the press. However, Cusco FC made the official announcement that Argentinian Miguel Rondelli will be the manager in 2024. He is accompanied by assistant manager Luciano Precone, physical trainer Guido Thompson and video assistant Miguel Cevallos.

45-year old Miguel Rondelli started as a manager of youth teams in his native Buenos Aires, specifically at Velez Sarsfield. In 2018 he moved to Ecuador, initially managing Universidad Catolica youth team. In 2020 he became the manager of the main team at Universidad Catolica, the first time he was in charge of a senior team. He stayed at Universidad Catolica until the end of the 2022 season. In 2023 he became manager of Emelec, also in Ecuador, but was sacked in June 2023 because of poor results.

At Cusco FC, Miguel Rondelli and his team will have the difficult task to build up a new team for 2024, given that most of the 2023 players have already left for other clubs.

Total Soccer of Medellín and Ciamen FC of Cúcuta will play the 2023 final of the Colombian Primera C

The two big favorites, Total Soccer and Ciamen, qualified to the 2023 final of the Colombian Primera C after the second leg of the semifinals, played on Saturday, 25 November 2023. After a very conclusive win in the first leg played in Medellín, 6-1, Total Soccer lost 2-0 to Atlético Aracataca in the second leg, played in Aracataca (Magdalena Department), but qualified to the final with the aggregate score of 6-3. Unusually, the match was not broadcasted, a fact which raises some questions. The only information which came out so far, except for the final score, is that the match was interrupted for some time in the second half because of a very strong rain. The game resumed but the conditions were not exactly proper due to the high amounts of water remaining on the field. For Total Soccer, this is their second participation in the competition and also the second time they reach the final. They won the 2022 final over Equipo Azul, so they are looking forward to defending their title.

Ciamen FC had a more difficult game at home (in Cúcuta) against Ilusión Naranja but they eventually won 3-2. Given that the result of the first leg was 2-2, Ciamen qualified with an aggregate score of 5-4. Because they achieved a higher number of points in the semifinals (4 points, a win and a draw) compared to Total Soccer (3 points), Ciamen will have the chance of playing the second (decisive) leg of the final at home.

Therefore, the first leg of the final will be played next week-end, on 2 or 3 December, in Medellín, most likely at Marte 1 Stadium within the Atanasio Girardot Sports Complex, while the second leg will be played in Cúcuta, on Vallesther football field, either on 9 or 10 December 2023.

Fayoum and Egypt Stars collided without goals

Fayoum SC - Egypt Stars 0-0

Second classified Fayoum and third classified Egypt Stars faced each other in one of the most important matches of round 5 of the Egyptian Second Division B, group B. Stakes were high, because each team try to stay as close as possible to leaders Tersana, to promote to the next year Second Division A.

The match was very disputed. Photo source: Fayoum SC Facebook page

The two sides tried to find a way to break through the opposite defence, but were unable to score a single goal, despite several good chances. Egypt Stars had two big opportunities, one in the first half, when a shot went slightly wide, and one in the second half, when a header hit the crossbar. Fayoum also had a couple of chances.

The two sides eventually settled with a goalless draw, which keeps them in second and third place respectively, but farther away from the leaders Tersana.

Starting line-ups:

Fayoum: Mohamad Kandil - Islam El Sayed Lamouna, Ahmed Shukri, Ahmed Salah, Mahmoud Arafat - Mohamad Morsi, Hamad Hassan, Mohamad Ismail - Taher Saad, Ashraf Abdelkawi, Ahmed Sobhi. Manager: Saeed Sobhi.

Egypt Stars: Mohamed Hegazy - Mohamed Chilavert Shefa, Ahmed Ashraf, Mohamed Al Zaini, Omar Mohamed - Ahmed Hassan, Emmanuel Mintah, Mohamed Khaled - Mohamed El Dsoky, Mahmoud Ramadan, Ahmed Sosta. Manager: Essam Eid.

This week there are matches in the second preliminary round of the Egypt Cup, so there is a break for Fayoum SC, which were eliminated in the first round. Egypt Stars will have a difficult match away at La Viena FC.

The Egyptian Second Division will resume next week, on the 1st of December, with the matches of the 6th round. Fayoum will play away at Tamya, while Egypt Stars will face Al Wasta at home in a local derby. In the table, Tersana are now sole leaders with 11 points (in 5 matches), followed by Fayoum with 9 points (5 matches) and Egypt Stars with 7 points (out of 4 matches). These three teams seem to be the main contenders for promotion to the Second Division A.

Total Soccer, very close to another final of the Colombian Primera C

Total Soccer - Atlético Aracataca 6-1 (4-0)

Jarol Mosquera 6', 42', Herrera 15', 90'+2', Parra 34', Fierro 60' penalty - Acosta 53'.

Sunday, 19 November 2023, 2 pm local time (7 pm UTC), Atanasio Girardot Sports Complex, Marte 1 Stadium, Medellín, Colombia, Colombian Primera C, semifinal, 1st leg.

Total Soccer took a very serious option to qualify to yet another final of the Colombian Primera C, and to win back to back titles in this competition, the highest available for amateur teams in Colombia. Unfortunately, there is no promotion to Primera B, otherwise the stakes would have been even higher.

After a rather tight match in the quarter-finals against Ilusión Naranja, which Total Soccer ended up winning only at penalty shoot-outs, the semifinal match against Atlético Aracataca was very well prepared, especially taking into account that the second leg (the decisive match) will be played away, in Aracataca (Department of Magdalena).

Total Soccer dominated from start to finish, and especially in the first half one noticed a big difference between the two teams, which materialized on the score sheet as well. After less than six minutes, Jhon Arboleda found a beautiful filtering pass, which left Jarol Mosquera all alone with the goalkeeper, and a lob solved the first goal: 1-0 (6').

Yojan Parra had a great run on the right side, and passed to Juan José Herrera in front of the goal to make it 2-0 from short range (15'). Jhon Arboleda assisted Yojan Parra in the box, and Parra's shot went to the far post: 3-0 (34'). A counterattack led by Herrera was interrupted by a defender, who wanted to move the ball away, but instead assisted Jarol Mosquera, whose shot went in once again: 4-0 (42').

The visitors left a very poor impression in the first half, and the overall feeling was that Total Soccer can score as many goals as they want. Nevertheless, things changed a little bit in the second half. Atlético Aracataca, with a few changes in the line-up, played more offensively, while Total Soccer looked content with the result, and changed tactics, into a game of preserving the advantage.

This did not pay off, since the visitors were able to score very soon, by means of Didier Acosta, after a strong individual action, in which he dribbled almost everyone who was in his way, before placing the ball near the left corner: 4-1 (53').

Total Soccer sensed danger in this, and returned to a more offensive mood. A free kick was executed by Danilo Morón, goalkeeper Mengual saved, but there was a fight over possession of the ball inside the box, which ended up with the Total Soccer player falling to the ground. The assistant referee signalled to the referee that it was a foul and a penalty was awarded. The other goalkeeper, William Fierro, converted: 5-1 (60').

Total Soccer made many substitutions, the visitors tried to score other goals, but the the home side had the biggest opportunities. In stoppage time, after a beautiful counterattack led by Danilo Morón, Juan José Herrera scored with a great shot from inside the box to the upper right corner: 6-1 (90'+2').

Total Soccer: Fierro - Jaaziel Mosquera (Taborda 88'), Montes, Gutiérrez, Avendaño, García (Tapias 70'), Arboleda (Hernández 65'), Parra (Berrio 70'), Morón, Herrera, Jarol Mosquera (Córdoba 65'). Manager: Juan Gabriel Sepúlveda.

Atlético Aracataca: Mengual - Moguea, Parra, Granados, Zúñiga, Bustillo (Blanco 37'), Vargas (Arévalo 25'), Angulo (Rivera 46'), Villa (Escorcia 36'), Acosta, Vidal.

Referee: Bryan Salazar.

Yellow cards: Jarol Mosquera 54', Montes 90' - Vargas 26', Zúñiga 33', Granados 57', Moguea 89'.

On Saturday, 25 November, the second leg will be played on Chelo Castro Municipal Stadium in Aracataca. Total Soccer are big favorites to qualify once again in the Primera C final.

Competition details and format

The Gabrovo Regional League (also known as the Gabrovo Oblast Group) sits at the fourth tier in the football pyramid of Bulgaria, along with the other regional leagues which are organized at the level of each Bulgarian province (oblast). Unlike other regional leagues, it consists of only one division, ”A”, which is at the same time the highest and the lowest football level in Gabrovo Province. 2023-2024 was the tenth consecutive season when Gabrovo Regional League consisted of a single division (group). The competition was organised by the regional administrative football zone centre based in Veliko Tarnovo, belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). FK Tryavna 1922 were the defending champions, since they choose not to promote to the Bulgarian Third League and remained in the Gabrovo Regional League for 2023-2024. They were unable to defend their title, as they lost 5-3 to Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo at home, in a decisive match. Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo became the 2023-2024 champions of the Gabrovo League.

There were 11 teams which competed in the 2023-2024 Gabrovo Regional League, nine from the 2022-2023 season, one relegated from the Bulgarian Third League (Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo), and one that newly enrolled (Yantra 2019 Gabrovo II), while Angel Kanchev Tryavna had withdrawn before the start of the competition. Sportist Petko Slaveykov withdrew after round 16 and were demoted to the bottom of the table. Their opponents were awarded 3-0 wins after round 16, but their previous results counted. The competition was organized as a double round robin championship, in which each team played each other team twice, once at home and once away, a total of 20 matches. However, there were 22 rounds, and because of the odd number of participants, one team received a bye in each round.

The competition started on 16 September 2023, and the first half of the season (rounds 1 to 11) was scheduled to end in December 2023. However, due to weather concerns and other reasons, the competition was stopped after the 8th round on 19 November 2023, and the remaining three rounds of the first half of the season, as well as other postponed matches from the first eight rounds, were played in March 2024. The second half of the season (rounds 12 to 22) started at the end of March 2024 and ended on 16 June 2024. Between November 2023 and February 2024, there was a large winter break when transfers were allowed. Most matches were usually played on Sunday afternoons, and some matches on Saturday afternoons.

The winners of the league may be promoted to the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group (Severozapadna Treta Liga) if they meet the standards required for this competition and places are available. If the number of places is lower than the number of teams which apply for promotion, then a promotion play-off may be organized between the winners of the different regional leagues. In recent times, however, the number of places was usually high enough and no play-offs have been played. Moreover, some teams which did not even topped the regional league were invited to fill in the places left in the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group, meaning that even lower classified teams may promote, once they meet the specific standards, involving the existence of junior teams enrolled in national or regional competitions, among others. The 2022-2023 winners of the Gabrovo Regional League, FK Tryavna 1922, initially applied for promotion, but later changed their mind and remained in the Gabrovo Regional League.

This season, defending champions FK Tryavna 1922, Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo and Planinets Kravenik were the main favorites to win the Gabrovo Regional League and to promote to the Bulgarian Third League – North-West Group. Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo had a very good start of the season, winning six consecutive games, but then lost 2-1 to FK Tryavna 1922 at home. However, in spring 2024, Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo won 5-3 away at FK Tryavna 1922 in a decisive match. In round 21, on 9 June 2024, Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo won 8-1 at home over Dan Kolov Sennik and were mathematically promoted before the last round, when they did not play. FK Tryavna 1922 came second, only two points behind the leaders. Planinets Kravenik finished third, way behind the top two teams.

Relegation was not an issue, since there is no lower division or league.
