Competition details and format

 

The Lebanese Premier League, or simply the Lebanese League, represents the top tier of the football system in Lebanon. It is organised by the Lebanese Football Association and 2024-2025 was the 63^rd complete season since its establishment in 1934, or the 65^th official season as counted by the Lebanese Football Association. This was the first season when VAR was introduced for all the matches. The competition started on 20 September 2024, but only one round was played, then the competition was suspended due to Israeli attacks. After the ceasefire at the end of November 2024, the Lebanese FA decided to resume the competition on 25 January 2025 with the matches of round 2. Nejmeh were the defending champions, but lost any chance to defend their title due to poor results in the regular season and throughout the first part of the play-off. Ansar became champions for the 15^th time, while Safa came in second place.

The “split” competition format introduced in 2020-2021 was also kept for 2024-2025, involving two stages; the second stage involved a triple round robin, just like in 2023-2024. In the first (regular) stage, the established format is a single round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams once, a total of 11 rounds. This stage started on 20 September 2024 and ended on 30 March 2025. It involved a large break from late September to late January due to Israeli attacks.

After the first stage, there was a short break which was also a transfer window period.

For the second stage, teams were divided into two groups: the top 6 teams played each other in a triple round robin for the championship title in a play-off group, while the bottom 6 teams played each other in a triple round robin to avoid relegation, in a play-out group. Just like in the previous seasons, only half of the points earned in the first stage were carried over in the second stage. The points were halved, and then rounded up if necessary. However, the goal difference record was carried over entirely in the second stage. The second stage started on 12 April 2025 and ended on 19 July 2025.

Matches were played mostly during the week-ends, but also in mid-week, for various reasons. The usual kick-off time was in the afternoon. MTV Lebanon had the broadcasting rights for all the matches of the Lebanese Premier League but they broadcasted only some of the matches, through MTV Sports, on different media outlets, including their TV channel, YouTube channel and Facebook. All matches were broadcasted by the Lebanese FA on the FIFA Plus (FIFA +) website.

Matches in the first stage of the season were played according to a drawing of lots. Because of this system, some teams would have a higher number of matches on their home ground than others. However, almost all the matches in the first stage were played on neutral grounds in order to provide a more balanced and equal situation for all the teams.

In the second stage of the season, teams played each other according to the first stage table, in two groups: the top 6 teams were involved in the play-off (championship) group, while the bottom 6 teams were included in the play-out group. Matches in the second stage were scheduled in such a way that the first classified played the last classified in the first round and then with each better classified team, until they played the second classified in the last round. Therefore, the potentially decisive matches were scheduled in the last round.

The champions and the second classified have the right to play in the AFC Challenge Cup in the next season (2025-2026). The third classified may qualify for the Arab Champions Cup. The Lebanese FA Cup winners are no longer considered to play in any continental or international competition. The last two teams in the classification were relegated to the Second Division.

The defending champions, Nejmeh, were among the main favourites for the title this year, together with Al Ahed, Ansar, and Safa. In recent years, Nejmeh, Al Ahed, and Ansar have been the usual contenders for the title, while Safa became a strong contender this season. However, defending champions Nejmeh had a very poor season and were out early from the title battle. Ansar finished the first stage on top of the table, with Safa second only a couple of points behind and Al Ahed third, also very close. Ansar and Safa finished the regular season unbeaten, while Al Ahed only lost to Ansar.

The other teams were likely to fight for the fifth place at best. Their realistic goal was to classify in the upper half of the table (positions 5 and 6) at the end of the first stage, in order to play the championship play-off and to stay away from relegation as much as possible. Shabab Sahel, Racing, and Bourj FC, which qualified in the play-offs in the previous seasons, had a poorer season, and did not succeed to get to the play-offs. Hikma/Sagesse had their strongest season lately and succeeded to qualify to the play-off in fifth place, while Tadamon Sour surprisingly took the sixth place at the end of the regular season, after a number of good results, allowing them to qualify to the play-off and to keep Shabab Sahel once again out of it.

After the first part of the play-off, the order remained the same at the top, but the gaps increased, so Ansar were three points above Safa in second place and five points above Al Ahed in third. All three teams had some unexpected results, Ansar losing to Al Ahed and drawing with Tadamon Sour, Safa losing to Ansar and drawing to Al Ahed and Nejmeh, while Al Ahed lost to Tadamon Sour and Hikma / Sagesse. Nejmeh were challenged by Hikma/Sagesse for the fourth place, way behind the top three teams, while Tadamon Sour remained sixth, not far from the fourth and fifth place.

During the second part of the play-off, Safa took the lead temporarily, benefitting from Ansar losing to Al Ahed and drawing with Nejmeh. However, in the last round of the second part, Ansar won the head-to-head match against Safa and retook the lead, but only by one point. Al Ahed were already 6 points behind the leaders Ansar, meaning that they would not be able to compete for the title this year. Nejmeh climbed back into fourth place, while Hikma / Sagesse dropped into fifth and Tadamon Sour remained sixth.

In the third part of the play-off, the gap between Ansar and Safa steadily increased, because Ansar won four games in a row, while Safa drew against Nejmeh and Al Ahed. On 13 July 2025, Ansar became mathematically champions by winning 2-0 over Tadamon Sour, therefore increasing their lead to 5 points above Safa with one round to go. Safa defeated Ansar in the last round, but remained second, two points behind the champions, and Al Ahed third, despite the late recovery of Nejmeh, which only came fourth.

The other teams entered the play-out to avoid relegation. Newly-promoted Shabab Baalbek and Riyadi Al Abbasiyah FC, along with Shabab Al-Ghazieh, Racing and Bourj FC were among those expected to be contenders in the fight to avoid relegation. After the first stage, only Shabab Sahel in seventh place seemed safe, while the battle to avoid the bottom two places in the play-out would involve mainly Shabab Baalbek (bottom of the table), Shabab Al-Ghazieh (second to last), Bourj FC, and Riyadi Al Abbasiyah, all separated by only four points. After the first part of the play-out, Shabab Al-Ghazieh were last with only four points and looked too far from the others to avoid relegation, while Shabab Baalbek were second to last, with only eight points, also in relegation position. Riyadi Al Abbasiyah had three points more than Shabab Baalbek. Bourj FC had an excellent winning streak in the first three rounds of play-out, which led them away from relegation. Shabab Sahel in seventh place and Racing in eighth place seemed also safe after the first half of play-out.

During the second part of the play-out, it became obvious that the top three teams (Racing, Bourj, and Shabab Sahel) would not have to worry about the relegation, as the gap between them and the bottom three teams grew to at least 10 points. After the second part of the play-out, Shabab Al-Ghazieh continued to be last, three points away from Shabab Baalbek and seven points away from Riyadi Al Abbasiyah, the first team above the relegation line. Shabab Al-Ghazieh were mathematically relegated on 25 June, when Riyadi Al Abbasiyah won 2-0 away at Shabab Sahel, expanding the gap between them and Shabab Al-Ghazieh to 11 points, while Shabab Al Ghazieh had only three matches in hand. The second team to be relegated was therefore to be decided between Shabab Baalbek and Riyadi Al Abbasyiah, separated by 5 points with two rounds to go. Riyadi Al Abbasiyah only needed one point in the last two matches to be safe. In the second to last round, on 1 July, they won 4-1 away at Racing to secure their stay in the Premier League next season, while Shabab Baalbek lost 3-0 to Bourj and were relegated with one round to go.

Most of the teams (8 out of 12) are from Beirut and the southern suburbs of Beirut. Three teams, Tadamon Sour, Shabab Al-Ghazieh, and Riyadi Al Abbasiyah are located in the South Governorate. One team (Shabab Baalbek) is located in the Baalbek-Hermel Governorate.

Foreign players

 

There are four foreign players allowed in the squads, as well as a number of Lebanese-born Palestinian players.

 

Compulsory use of young players and limits to the use of players aged 30+

 

All teams have to use at least two young players, under 21 years of age, in the Premier League. There should be a minimum of 750 minutes played by one young player and 1200 combined minutes played by two young players for each team.

If teams fail to comply, points would be deducted at the end of the season.

Also, only eight players above the age of 30 are allowed in a roster, and only five of them can be used simultaneously in the field.

The top six teams in the regular season started the play-off with their first stage points halved and rounded up, if necessary. If two or more teams have the same number of points, the teams that had their points rounded up will be classified below those which had their points halved neatly, as the main ranking criterion, followed by the head-to-head results, the goal difference, and the number of goals scored. The goal record from the first stage is carried over in the second stage.

The order of the matches is such that the first classified will play the second classified in the fifth round. In the second and third part of the play-off, the order of matches remains unchanged, only the location is reversed.
