Competition details and format

The Slovak 3. Liga, also named TIPOS III. liga for sponsorship reasons, represents the third tier in the football system of Slovakia. The 2019-2020 season was supposed to be the 27th since Slovakia separated from the Czech Republic to become an independent state in 1993. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season was cancelled on the 26th of March 2020, because matches were only played in autumn 2019 while matches scheduled in spring 2020 have not been played and were unlikely to be played in due time.
There were 64 teams which competed in the 3. Liga in 2019-2020 and, just like in previous years, they were divided into 4 groups: Bratislava (16 teams), West (Západ, 16 teams), Centre (Stred, 16 teams) and East (Východ, 16 teams). Just like before, the competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds. The winners of every group were supposed to promote to the 2. Liga, while the worse classified teams were supposed to be relegated to the 4. Liga at the end of the season, their number depending on the group and circumstances. They were usually replaced by teams relegated from 2. Liga and teams promoted from the 4. Liga. However, due to the cancellation of the season, no teams promoted and no teams were relegated. The games in each group were organized by the four regional football associations, under the general supervision of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ).
Matches in the East (Východ) Group were organized by the Eastern Slovakia Football Association (VsFZ, Východoslovenský Futbalový Zväz). This group consisted of teams located in Prešov and Košice regions in the eastern part of Slovakia. The season started on the 27th of July 2019 and ended on the 24th of November 2019. No matches were played in spring 2020.
The main contenders for promotion were 1. FC Tatran Prešov, one of the traditionally strong teams in Slovakia, which were momentarily facing a financial crisis, as well as the other relegated team, ŠK Odeva Lipany, which came back to the 3. Liga after just one year in 2. Liga, and MFK Vranov nad Topľou, which were the strongest competitor for promotion in the previous year. FK Humenné were also considered among the favourites to a top position in this group. These four teams distanced themselves from the others in the upper part of the table. After 17 rounds, more than half of the season, 1. FC Tatran Prešov and ŠK Odeva Lipany were on top of the table, with the same number of points, while MFK Vranov nad Topľou and FK Humenné were just a few points behind. However, due to the cancellation of the season, no teams were promoted.
The usual number of relegated teams from the East Group is two, as they are replaced by the winners of 4. Liga North and 4. Liga South belonging to the Eastern Slovakia Football Association. After 17 rounds, TJ FK Veľké Revištia and MFK Slovan Giraltovce were last and second to last, and seemed to be the main candidates for relegation. FK Družstevník Plavnica, FK Pokrok SEZ Krompachy and (surprisingly) FK NOVES Spišská Nová Ves were also in the lower part of the table and have become involved in the fight against relegation. However, due to the cancellation of the season, no teams were eventually relegated.
