Competition details and format

The Egyptian Second Division B is the third tier in the Egyptian football system, having been established as such in 2023. The 2025-2026 season is the third season of the Second Division B and is organized by the Egyptian Football Association. Just like in the previous seasons, teams are distributed across six groups, but these have been coupled in larger groups of two, as Group 1 (A and B), Group 2 (A and B), and Group 3 (A and B). The number of teams increased again from 65 to 86, so that four groups include 14 teams and two groups (2 A and 3 B) include 15 teams. Group 1 B was also supposed to have 15 teams, but Asyut Cement had withdrawn before the start of the competition. The teams are distributed according to their geographical location: group 1 (A and B) includes mainly teams from Upper Egypt, group 2 (A and B) – teams from Greater Cairo and the North-East, and group 3 (A and B) – teams from Alexandria and the North-West.

The format for the 2025-2026 season was adjusted from the previous seasons; changes being confirmed in July 2025. While last season the top three classified in each of the six groups qualified for the promotion play-offs, forming three groups of six teams, this season only the top classified team of each group (A and B) will qualify for the promotion play-offs, which will involve head-to-head two-leg decisive matches between the top teams of group 1 (A and B), group 2 (A and B), and group 3 (A and B), respectively. The three winners of these double-leg encounters will be champions of groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively, and will promote to the Second Division. Teams classified on the bottom four places in each of the six groups are to be relegated to the Third Division.

The competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 26 rounds in most groups. In groups 2 A and 3 B there are also 7 matches in each round, but one team receives a bye in each round, because there are 15 teams in these groups, and therefore there will be a total of 30 rounds. The competition started on 2 September 2025 with matches in group 2 (A and B). In Group 1 B (North Upper Egypt and Giza), the season started on 8 September 2025. The season is scheduled to end in May 2026 with the promotion play-offs. Games in Group 1 (A and B) are played usually on Mondays afternoon, rarely on Tuesdays, and less in other days.

In Group 1 B, the main contenders for promotion are considered the teams from Cairo and Giza area, Team FC and newly-promoted Media and Cascada, along with El Minya, Misr Lel Makkasa, and Telephonat Beni Suef, the strongest teams of the Upper Egypt area in this group. Although newly-promoted teams, Seela and Golden Gate are also expected to compete well. At half-season, Team FC were in top position, unbeaten, three points ahead of El Minya and Cascada in second and third, and six points ahead of Media and Seela, which came in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The fight to avoid the four relegation spots involves most of the other teams. Newly-promoted Naser Mallawi and Naser El Fekreia, along with Beni Mazar, Tamya, and Egypt Stars are among the most vulnerable. At half-season, Mallawi were bottom of the table without a single win, five points behind Beni Mazar and Egypt Stars, all three in relegation position. Tamya and Naser El Fekreia were only four points above them, one above and one below the relegation line.

Bourj FC withdrew from the Lebanese Premier League

Given that the (former?) owner, president and main sponsor of Bourj FC, Fadi Nasser, had announced in December that he would no longer support the club financially starting with January 2026, the club management announced that Bourj FC withdraws from the Lebanese Premier League. As pointed out earlier, this was one of the two possibilities, the worse one, but one may believe that the club management had really no other choice. This will simplify matters in terms of relegation from the Lebanese League in 2025-2026, as only one other team will be relegated, apart from Bourj FC.

The club had already remained without the manager Ahmad Atwi and most of the players, while the rest of the players were probably not interested to continue and were anyway searching for alternatives.

It is not yet clear if the youth teams of Bourj FC will continue in their competitions, or not. If the club will continue to exist, even if only with the junior teams, or it will fold and disappear. It would be a great tragedy for such a popular club to disappear altogether. This would be the most pessimistic alternative.

In the most optimistic alternative, the club will find a new sponsor in the first half of 2026 and will be able to enrol in the Second Division for the 2026-2027 season.

Bourj FC in financial collapse: manager Ahmad Atwi resigned and most players left

The year 2026 has started badly for Bourj FC. The signs were all there in the last weeks of 2025: club president Fadi Nasser announced that December 2025 will be the last month when the salaries are paid. The club management started to look for alternatives, but the situation has been dramatic ever since. In terms of performance, the team has done its job, winning 2-1 over Racing and 1-0 over Al Riyadi Al Abbassiyah, the two main rivals in the fight to avoid relegation. Then, in the last days of December, they lost 4-1 both to Al Ahed and to Ansar, but these defeats were pretty much expected, given the big difference in terms of value between the teams. Even so, Bourj FC classified 10th (out of 12) at the end of the regular season, right above the relegation line, and only one point behind Tadamon Sour and Mabarrah in 8th and 9th respectively, and 2 points above Al Riyadi Al Abbassiyah, the first team below the relegation line.

A year ago, the situation was very similar, with Bourj FC in 10th place at the end of the regular season, and then they had an excellent play-out, with 11 wins, 2 draws and only 2 defeats, finishing first in the play-out and seventh overall.

It is obvious that the results were not the main cause for Fadi Nasser's departure. In fact, he had announced his departure twice before, in summer 2024, and again in summer 2025. In each situation, the club somehow survived, and the president eventually came back and stabilized the club financially. This time, it might be different. In summer, there was enough time for the club management to find alternatives, to sign players, to start the competition even with a (very) low budget. Now, the resignation of manager Ahmad Atwi, a close friend of (former?) president Fadi Nasser, is a clear indication that Nasser would not change his mind.

Ahmad Atwi, former manager of Bourj FC. Photo source: Bourj FC Facebook page

Even if Fadi Nasser changes his mind or another sponsor is found, it would be perhaps too late because most of the players have already left. There is no manager for the moment, it would be a miracle to have training sessions with the remaining players, but who will lead such sessions?

There are less than two weeks before the start of the second half of the season, there will be some cup matches in which Bourj FC are (un)luckily not involved, because they are already out of the competition, but then the play-out will start. A solution is needed quickly for the club to move ahead somehow.

Realistically, there are two possible options. The first option would be to continue the competition with a very low budget and a very young and inexperienced roster. The fact that many of the outgoing players have chosen clubs in the Second Division is an indication of the fact that in the current situation Bourj FC does not match even the budget of a Second Division club. As a result, it would be impossible to sign any good players, but it might be a possibility to attract (very) young talents, who would like to add to their CV the fact that they played in the Lebanese Premier League. With some luck, Bourj FC may even get a few young players from the bigger clubs on loan, the kind of players that would never get a minute in their current team, but who would get (some) playing time in the top Lebanese League for Bourj FC. Of course, in this case, there will be no chance to avoid relegation, and it would be a miracle even to get some points. The main objectives of the club would be to survive, to raise young talented players, and to buy some time until the much needed financial support will be found. Yes, they would be relegated to the Second Division at the end of the 2025-2026 season, but they will have eight months to find a solution for the club to survive beyond this season, and to start the 2026-2027 season in the Second Division with a fighting chance.

The other option is to withdraw. This would be extremely sad, and nobody really wants this, not even the rivals, but it might be the case if the budget is really that low that not even the competition costs cannot be covered, let alone paying the staff and (or) the players. There might be people who would join (almost) for free, but you still have to pay the referees, the medical assistance, the security, and so on. If the club is not able to sustain such costs, the only reasonable choice would be to withdraw. It is hard to tell what are the consequences for this. The club might continue with their junior teams, but at the senior level it might be relegated to the Second Division or lower, or worse it might disappear altogether, although I think it would be highly unlikely for the club to disappear completely, given the strong support it has in Bourj el-Barajneh and within the Shiite community in the Dahieh.

Of course, there is also a third option, which is more like a dream than a realistical option at the moment: the club to be saved financially before the start of the play-out. I am sure that the people involved within the club are looking right now for any solution, even for a short term one, to save the club, and to go forward, to continue in the play-out. Starting the play-out, even with a very limited budget, would enable a potential solution, not just for now, but also for the entire second half of the season.

The best of 2025

2025 has been a challenging year for most of the 10 teams we are writing about: Bourj FC, Cusco FC, Fayoum SC, Kamonyi FC, 1. FK Svidník, FK Tryavna 1922, Total Soccer, Maaraba SC, Maardu Linnameeskond II FC Starmedia, and Terrace Onions FC. There have been many ups and downs, so it is very difficult to draw an overall conclusion.

The two teams that play at the top level, Bourj FC and Cusco FC, had a good year. The situation is still very different for each of them. Cusco FC had indeed an excellent 2025 season, ending in second place in the Peruvian First Division (Liga 1), after winning the play-off to play directly in the 2026 Copa Libertadores group stage. This actually equals the best performance of the club in history, as they finished second in three other occasions (2013, 2014, and 2017), but either after losing the play-off final for the title (2013 and 2014) or without any play-offs (2017). This was the second consecutive year with Argentinian manager Miguel Rondelli, and it was even better than the previous one, so we are witnessing an era of unusual stability for Cusco FC, which pays off in terms of results.

On the other hand, Bourj finished in great style the 2024-2025 season, in 7th place, which was the best achievable in the play-out, but the club is struggling financially. In summer, the financial situation was critical, and the club was barely able to start the new season (2025-2026). At the end of the regular season, they are in 10th place, right above the relegation line, and the situation is not as bad as it was in the previous season from the point of view of the regular season, but the club is once again facing financial bankruptcy. Support is needed quickly or the team may even withdraw from the competition.

The only team playing in the second tier, Kamonyi FC of Rwanda, had a rather poor year, finishing in 9th place (out of 13 teams) in Group B of the Second Division at the end of the 2024-2025 season. The situation is not very bright either in 2025-2026.

Total Soccer have recovered a little after a very poor 2024 season. This year, they managed a better performance in the Colombian Primera C (third tier), qualifying for the knock-out stages, but they were eventually eliminated in the third round. They also had good results in the Colombian Youth League.

Fayoum SC continue their downfall, with rather mediocre results in the Egyptian Second Division B (third tier), as they finished the 2024-2025 season in 8th place (out of 11), and they are equally meandering in the lower half of the table in the 2025-2026 season.

Terrace Onions FC were equally in the lower half of the table in the Bermudian Corona League (third tier) at the end of the 2024-2025 season, and they are not any better in 2025-2026.

The worst situation has been however registered by 1. FK Svidník, which withdrew at the beginning of spring from the Slovak 4th League, and were relegated straight to the lowest existing tier, which in their case is the local Svidník League (7th tier). Although big favorites to win the league and to promote, they seem to be unable to get things right even at this very low level, and they are only 6th (out of 12) after the first half of the 2025-2026 season.

One might think that there is nothing worse than that, but there is. FK Tryavna 1922 are in fact in such a position, because this is the second consecutive year that the team has not been enrolled in any senior competition. The club still exists but only with some junior teams.

To end up on a happy note, we should highlight the fact that Maardu Linnameeskond II has been revived after several years of silence. The first team back to back promotions to the Esiliiga B and now to Esiliiga (second tier in Estonian football) triggered the need for a second team, which has been reestablished after a merger with Tallinna FC Starmedia, so now the team has a very long name: Maardu Linnameeskond II FC Starmedia. They competed in the Estonian Second League B (the fifth tier) and finished third, very close to promotion, which would surely come the next year if things will continue in the same way.

Even Maaraba SC of Syria showed some signs of life after many years of reduced activity, limited only to junior teams. Their senior team has been recently reactivated and they have even played a few friendly matches, perhaps having in view the participation to official competitions once again.
