Competition details and format

The Slovak 3. Liga, also named TIPOS III. liga for sponsorship reasons, represents the third tier in the football system of Slovakia. The 2018-2019 season is the 26th since Slovakia separated from the Czech Republic to become an independent state in 1993.
There are 63 teams which compete in the 3. Liga in 2018-2019 and, just like in previous years, they are divided into 4 groups: Bratislava (16 teams), West (Západ, 16 teams), Centre (Stred, 16 teams) and East (Východ, 15 teams). Just like before, the competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds. The winners of every group are promoted to the 2. Liga, while the worse classified teams are relegated to the 4. Liga at the end of the season, their number depending on the group and circumstances. They are replaced by teams relegated from 2. Liga and teams promoted from the 4. Liga. The games in each group are organized by the four regional football associations, under the general supervision of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ).
Matches in the East (Východ) Group are organized by the Eastern Slovakia Football Association (VsFZ, Východoslovenský Futbalový Zväz). This group consists of teams located in Prešov and Košice regions in the eastern part of Slovakia.
The East (Východ) Group also had had 16 teams initially, but MFK Rožnava, eighth classified in the previous season, withdrew from the competition before it started. During the winter break, FC Tatran B Prešov also withdrew. Therefore the competition continued with only 14 teams for the remaining rounds of the season in spring 2019. There were rumours that AŠK Maria Huta may also withdraw in winter, but they finally found a solution and changed their location (and most of the staff and players) to Spišské Vlachy for spring 2019.
The main contenders for promotion were FC Košice, one of the traditionally strong teams in Slovakia, and MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou, which were also among the teams fighting for promotion in the previous year. FK NOVES Spišská Nová Ves did not become involved in the upper part of the classification, although they had been initially considered among the favourites as they have just been relegated from the 2. Liga. FC Košice promoted mathematically after round 25, on 12 May 2019. Although they did not play, second-placed MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou failed to win away at Tesla Stropkov, drawing 1-1, and there was a gap of 13 points between them and leaders FC Košice with only 5 rounds remaining and only four games to play for both teams.
In the lower part of the table, relegation to the 4. Liga seemed no longer an issue, because MFK Rožnava and FC Tatran B Prešov withdrew. The usual number of relegated teams from the East Group is two, as they are replaced by the winners of 4. Liga North and 4. Liga South belonging to the Eastern Slovakia Football Association. Therefore, under normal circumstances, no other teams should be relegated, as there are only 14 teams competing, and the normal number of teams in a group is 16. However, due to the potentially large number of relegated teams from 2. Liga, it was still possible for one or more teams to be relegated to 4. Liga. This issue became clear in May 2019, when it was confirmed that 3 (out of 4) teams relegated from 2. Liga would play in 3. Liga – East in the next season: ŠK Odeva Lipany, FC Tatran Prešov and FK Slavoj Trebišov. In this context, it was good to know whether the Eastern Slovakia Football Association would increase the number of teams in 3. Liga – East to 18 teams for 2019-2020, or if they stick to the original 16 teams, in which case two more teams should be relegated, or just one if the number of promoted teams from 4. Liga would be also reduced to one. As AŠK Maria Huta were no longer able to avoid the last place in the table, all the teams in the lower half of the classification fought to avoid the 13th place, as it might result in relegation to the 4. Liga. Eventually, FK Pokrok SEZ Krompachy finished 13th and were waiting for a decision of the Eastern Slovakia Football Association. However, they were not relegated, because FK Slavoj Trebišov were reprieved from relegation from the 2. Liga as Lokomotiva Košice announced that they will no longer compete in the 2. Liga in 2019-2020 and enrolled only in the fifth league, in place of their second team, Lokomotiva Košice B.

Attendance

If we are to believe the numbers provided by the official site of the Eastern Slovakia Football Association, a total of 56,502 people attended the 182 games whose results still counted at the end of the competition, therefore without taking into account the 17 games played by 1. FC Tatran Prešov B before they withdrew in winter, because their results were all cancelled.
The average attendance was 310 spectators per game and it is difficult to assess whether this is a high or low number, as there is no other reference, so one cannot compare this figure. However, considering the stadium capacities, normally above 1,000, this figure is rather low.
Attendance numbers are usually round, so one can actually imagine that they are just an approximation of the real figures. Nevertheless, in the absence of any other more reliable source, a decent analysis can be performed.
One can easily notice that most audiences are in between 100 and 400 spectators, with few exceptions. In fact, the average of 310 is mostly given by the high audience that very few teams enjoy at home, mainly FC Košice (607 on average), FK Humenné (501 on average), MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou (486 on average) and MFK Snina (408 on average), with only one other club, MŠK Tesla Stropkov (320 on average), slightly above the general average. The first three classified, FC Košice, FK Humenné and MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou had the highest audience, which is logical, as supporters come in larger numbers when the team has good results. The second place in terms of audience of FK Humenné might also be explained by the fact that the team has just promoted and their supporters were eager to see new opponents in a higher league.
At the lower end, it must be noted that the differences between the remaining nine teams are not so important in terms of audience. Two teams had an average attendance below 200, last classified AŠK Maria Huta (155 on average), a team which also changed location in winter, and TJ FK Vel’ké Revištia (145 on average), which had the lowest home audience.

The highest attendance (1500 people) was recorded at the game between the first two classified, FC Košice and MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou, in Košice. This match could have been decisive for promotion, so it is easy to explain why it stirred more interest than any other game. Only three other games had an attendance above 1000: FK Humenné – FC Košice (1350 spectators), FK Humenné – MFK Snina (1200 spectators) – a local derby, and MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou – FC Košice (1150 spectators).
At the other end, few games had an audience below 100, or perhaps there was a certain amount of shame in recording such low numbers. However, the lowest attendance was registered in the last round, at the potentially decisive game for relegation between FK Pokrok SEZ Krompachy and TJ FK Vel’ké Revištia: only 48 people were present. Nevertheless, this low number was determined mainly by the extremely bad weather at the time, which caused the match to be interrupted.
Except for this, the lowest audience was recorded surprisingly in a match between MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou and FK Humenné, attended by just 58 people according to the official site. This is unusual, as the game was played in the first round, when interest is normally higher, and the two teams were among the best in the group.
The first two classified, FC Košice and MFK Vranov nad Topl’ou, gathered the highest attendance when playing away. However, the numbers were lower compared to their home audience: FC Košice had an away average attendance of 521 while MFK Vranov had 415. The only other team that had an away average attendance clearly above the general average was MFK Snina (343), while AŠK Maria Huta, FK Pokrok SEZ Krompachy and 1. FK Svidník had an away attendance very similar to the general average.

It is somehow difficult to explain why a team like AŠK Maria Huta, last classified, attracts more people to the stadium when playing away. It is perhaps the fact that supporters come in larger numbers if they feel that their team has a better chance in winning the game or perhaps just the curiosity of seeing a newly-promoted team.
On the other hand, the other newly-promoted team, FK Humenné, is second to last in this classification, which is again a surprise, also because it was one of the contenders in this group.
The least interesting team to see was ŠK Milénium 2000 Bardejovská Nová Ves, which was last in the table during most of the first half of the season. They attracted an average attendance of 228 when playing away, which is anyway better than their average attendance at home, of just 204.
