Deportivo La Guaira - Real Garcilaso 1-0 in the first stage of Copa Libertadores

Deportivo La Guaira (from Venezuela) and Real Garcilaso (from Peru) started early the official matches in 2019 as they met in the first leg of the first stage of Copa Libertadores on Wednesday evening, 23 January 2019, at the Estadio Olimpico de la UCV in Caracas.
The new Chilean head coach of Real Garcilaso, Hector Tapia, used all five foreigners in the roster on the pitch, which would not be possible in the Peruvian league. Real Garcilaso dominated quite clearly the game and had several good chances, missed mainly by the Argentinian striker Danilo Carando, who seems far from the form he showed two seasons ago when he last played for the Peruvian side.

With new players making for more than half the team, it is obvious that more time is needed to create relations between the players and to form a cohesive team.
The defense did not look so well, either. In one of the very few chances that the home side had, Azocar scored with a mild shot from outside the box, surprising goalkeeper Ortiz in the 71st minute.
The visitors struggled to get an equalizer but a goal by Robles was correctly disallowed for offside.
La Guaira: Santilli - Velasquez, Luna, Peraza, Cumana - Azocar (90+1 Marin), Flores, Suanno, Lugo - Balza (90+3 Salazar), Cabezas (82 J. Perez). Manager: Daniel Farias.
Real Garcilaso: Ortiz - Herrera, Robles, Quina, Cossio - Miguez, Archimbaud (56 Manco) - Nunez (74 Lecaros), Ramua, C. Souza (90 Tuesta) - Carando. Manager: Hector Tapia.
Referee: Cesar Deischler (Chile).
The game was played while heavy rioting was taking place in Caracas for political reasons, and there were rumours that the match could have been postponed, also due to the tense diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Peru at the moment.
The return leg will be played in Cusco on Tuesday evening, 29 January 2019. Taking into account what happened in the first match, Real Garcilaso have a fair chance to win conclusively and qualify for the second stage of Copa Libertadores, where they would play against Atletico Nacional of Colombia.
