Fayoum SC narrowly escape relegation after 2-0 win over Media in the last round of the Egyptian Second Division, Group A

The last round of the Egyptian Second Division was played on Thursday, the 18th of April. In Group A, the kick-off for all the matches was at the same time (in the afternoon), although everything had been settled before the last round, except for one team to join the other three teams already relegated to the Third Division. Was it to be Fayoum or Al Nasr Lel Taa'den? Equal in terms of points, the criterion to differentiate them was the direct matches, which favoured Fayoum, who won 1-0 at home and drew 1-1 away. Therefore, a win for Fayoum in the last round would have meant that Al Nasr Lel Taa'den were to be relegated, even if they won, too. Both teams played at home against sides which were no longer involved in any "hot" part of the table, so it was easy to imagine that both Fayoum and Al Nasr Lel Taa'den would win, which actually happened.

Fayoum (in green) and Media (in blue) met in the last round

Fayoum SC had, at least theoretically, a better opponent, because Media were classified third before the last round. However, Fayoum struggled to get those three salvation points and eventually won the game, even if the first half ended 0-0. Right after the beginning of the second half, Ahmed Taymour scored for the home side: 1-0 (48'). Calmness came with the second goal, scored by Mahmoud Abu Zeid in the 75th minute: 2-0.

Fayoum eventually won and remain in the Second Division

All the people involved in Fayoum Sports Club deserve congratulations, for a difficult season which ended up well. The new coach, Magdy Tolba, who came in the middle of the season, succeeded to save the team from relegation to the Third Division, even if everything was on the edge right until the very last round. The two wins in the last two rounds were decisive for the team to remain one more year in the Second Division. The next season should be carefully prepared. The team needs stability in order to achieve a better performance. It would be great if Fayoum Stadium would be once again available for the team, which played all the 2018-2019 home games at Alassiouty Sports Complex, quite far from Fayoum and their supporters.

On the other hand, Al Nasr Lel Taa'den are relegated at the end of a very strange season for them, which began very well, with the team considered one of the candidates for promotion, and ended up badly, after a long spell of negative results, including a winless run of 10 rounds.
