Sunday, the 9th of February 2020, 11:00 am local time (16:00 UTC), Alberto Gallardo Stadium, Lima, Peru, the second round of the Peruvian Liga 1 - Apertura.
After a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to champions Deportivo Binacional, Cusco FC registered another loss, 3-2 away at Sporting Cristal. Frankly, one could see that coming, after the disastrous game in the first round, especially in the second half.
In this match, things changed a little bit: the first half was terrible, not the second half. Sporting Cristal was the only team in the field in the first half hour or so and scored three times. First, goalkeeper Pretel exited the area and sent the ball wrong, to Sandoval, who could not miss the empty goal: 1-0 (7'). Then, Ortiz made his way on the left and passed in the center of the area to Herrera, whose shot near the post doubled their advantage: 2-0 (20'). Eventually, Herrera's pass to Ortiz this time found him in the area, and a beautiful touch misguided the goalkeeper: 3-0 (25').
The match was pretty much finished at 3-0, and Sporting Cristal looked like a team who has done the job and only waited for the game to end. In the meantime, they had many other chances, given the poor defence provided by Cusco FC.

Luckily for the visitors, the home side missed their chances, while Cusco FC managed to score from their only two opportunities they had. First, a pass by Céspedes found Carando in a good position, and the Argentinian striker succeeded to overtake the defender and to shoot perfectly: 3-1 (69').
It looked like a consolation goal, but in stoppage time, a corner from the right side by Boló was converted into a second goal by Paniagua's header: 3-2 (90'+2').
Sporting Cristal: Solis - Madrid, G. Chávez, Merlo, Loyola - Cazulo (Castillo 83') - Sandoval, Calcaterra (Inga 74'), Távara, Ortiz (Corozo 78') - Herrera. Head coach: Manuel Barreto.
Cusco FC: Pretel - E. Chávez, Paniagua, Vílchez, Céspedes - Boló, Aucca, Atoche (Delgado 56'), Palacios (Carranza 37') - Ramúa (Guidino 62') - Carando. Head coach: Javier Arce.
Referee: José Mendoza.
Yellow cards: Cazulo 27', Solis 57', Ortiz 65', Merlo 90'+1' - Palacios 22'.
Cusco FC started badly. It looks like the change of name from Real Garcilaso did not bring them anything, on the contrary. There was a huge campaign, meant to "defeat" those supporters who resisted or were against the change in the name. But the club owners forgot the most important thing: a football team needs football players. They were left with merely two important players from the previous season and thought everything will work out just fine with 20 new players who had no time to adapt to altitude and to each other. The team looks terrible for the moment. One cannot say if head coach Javier Arce is to blame for this.
It is hard to say whether this game against Sporting Cristal was any better than the previous one, at home, against Binacional. At least they scored, that is one positive aspect. In the previous game, they had better possession. Hopefully, in the next games, things will improve quickly.
The first match is the first leg of the first stage in Copa Sudamericana, on Thursday evening, against Audax Italiano of Chile. The match will be played in Arequipa, as Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Stadium in Cusco does not have the necessary lighting equipment yet. Then, the next league match will be Monday, away at UTC de Cajamarca.
