Competition details and format
The Egyptian Second Division (sometimes called Premier League B) represents the second tier in the Egyptian football system and is organized by the Egyptian Football Association. The 2022-2023 season of the Egyptian Second Division was the 43rd since the Second Division was established in 1977 and the last one disputed in a format involving 3 groups of 16 teams each. Starting with 2023-2024, there will be a professional Second Division A with only one nation-wide group of 20 teams, and a semi-professional Second Division B, which will inherit the format of the Second Division, with three groups.
The teams were distributed according to their geographical location: Group A included the teams from Upper and Middle Egypt, as well as one team from the Red Sea Governorate (El Gouna), Group B – the teams from Cairo and the North-East, and Group C – the teams from Alexandria and the North-West.
Same as before, the winners of each group gained promotion to the Premier League without any promotion play-offs. Teams classified 2 through 5 in each group qualified for the next year Second Division A, while those classified sixth were involved in a play-off to establish two more teams to qualify for the Second Division A. The last team classified in this play-off, along with all the teams classified 7 through 15 in each group, will participate in the next year Second Division B. Teams classified bottom (16th) in each group were relegated to the Third Division.
The competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds. In Group A, the regular season started on 13 October 2022 and ended on 15 June 2023, while the play-offs finished on 9 July 2023. Games were played in mid-week, usually on Thursdays and sometimes on Wednesdays or Fridays, rarely in other days, in the afternoon, and spectators were allowed to attend, in most cases, unlike the previous seasons, affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Group A, at the beginning of the season the main contenders for promotion were considered El Gouna and Misr Lel Makkasa, which had just been relegated from the Premier League, El Minya and Aluminium, which fought for promotion in previous seasons, as well as newly-promoted La Viena FC. These teams, along with KIMA Aswan and Asyut Petroleum, were also considered among the favorites to classify in the top five (or six), allowing them to participate in the next year Second Division A. However, it was expected that almost all the teams would try to reach these positions in the table.
After the first half of the season, newly-promoted La Viena FC were quite surprisingly on top of the table, while Asyut Petroleum came in second position, just one point behind. The big favorites El Gouna and Misr Lel Makkasa were only third and fourth respectively, and rather far off, but still maintaining some chances for promotion. The battle for the fifth place seemed to involve mainly Al Nasr Lel Taa’den, Aluminium and KIMA Aswan, but several other teams might have reached this position.
In the second half of the season, El Gouna had an excellent run and gradually took over the other contenders, reaching the top spot after round 26, when they won 3-0 over Naser Mallawi, while La Viena surprisingly lost 1-0 away to Shoban Moslemen Qena, dropping into second position, just one point behind. Both teams won all their following matches, so the one-point gap was maintained right to the end. In the last round, El Gouna won 2-1 away at Shoban Moslemen Qena, and therefore maintained their top spot, and promoted to the Premier League, as they had one point more than second classified La Viena. Asyut Petroleum came into third position. Al Nasr Lel Taa’den had a very good second half of the season, including a record winning streak of 6 matches, which allowed them to reach the fourth place and to secure a spot in the next year Second Division A. Misr Lel Makkasa dropped into fifth place, but they were still above the line for the next year Second Division A.
The sixth place, which allowed the participation to the play-offs for the next year Second Division A together with the sixth classified in the other groups (B and C), was very sought after. KIMA Aswan were classified sixth for most of the time in the second half of the season, but they only had 2 points above El Minya before the last round of the season, which scheduled precisely the match between these two teams. El Minya won 2-1 at home over KIMA Aswan to climb into sixth place right at the end of the season, but classified last in the subsequent play-offs and will participate in the next year Second Division B.
The fight to avoid the only one relegation spot involved most of the other teams. After the first half of the season, Al Madina Al Monawara were bottom of the table, while Telephonat Beni Suef were second to last, with only one point more. Naser Mallawi, Shoban Moslemen Qena and Tamya were also not far away from the dangerous area of the classification.
In the second half of the season, Shoban Moslemen Qena improved their results and climbed above the relegation zone. Naser Mallawi, Tamya and Fayoum eventually succeeded to save themselves from relegation before the last round. With one round to go, Al Madina Al Monawara were in bottom position, while Telephonat Beni Suef were only one point above them. In the last round, Telephonat Beni Suef snatched a 2-1 win at home over Asyut Petroleum, and therefore Al Madina Al Monawara were relegated to the Third Division, despite winning 3-0 over Dayrout.
