Competition details and format

The Bulgarian Treta Liga (also known as the Third Amateur Football League and formerly as V AFG) represents the third tier in the football system of Bulgaria and the highest level of amateur football in Bulgaria. In 2020-2021 there was the 71st season since the creation of the third level division in Bulgaria in 1950 and the fifth season under the name Treta Liga since the reorganization of the football leagues in Bulgaria in 2016.

There are 69 teams which competed in the Treta Liga in 2020-2021 and, just like in previous years, they are divided geographically into 4 groups: North-East (Severoiztochna, 15 teams), North-West (Severozapadna, 18 teams), South-West (Yugozapadna, 18 teams) and South-East (Yugoiztochna, 18 teams). The North-East Group initially had 16 teams, but one team withdrew. Just like before, the competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 34 rounds for most of the groups, except for the North-East Group, where there are only 30 rounds to be played.

The first half of the season (rounds 1 to 17 for most groups) was played in summer and autumn, in the North-West Group from 9 August 2020 to 29 November 2020, while the second half of the season (rounds 18 to 34 for most groups) was played in spring, from 20 February 2021 to 30 May 2021. Between the two halves of the season, there was a large winter break when transfers were allowed. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several restrictions were in place and certain rules have been implemented to avoid the spread of the infection. The start of the season in August 2020 meant the start of official football matches after one of the longest breaks in history, more than nine months in the case of most teams in the North-West Group, which played their last official matches on the 31st of October 2019.

The first classified in each group of the Third League (Treta Liga) gained promotion to the Second League (Vtora Liga). The worst classified teams in each group were relegated to the regional (oblast) leagues at the end of the season, their number (usually two) depending on the group and circumstances.

The games in each group were organized by the four regional administrative football zone centres, belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU), based in Varna (North-East), Veliko Tarnovo (North-West), Sofia (South-West) and Plovdiv (South-East). Most of the matches were scheduled on Sunday afternoon. Very few games were played on Sunday morning, on Saturdays, Fridays and exceptionally on Mondays. There were a few mid-week rounds, when matches were played either Wednesday or Thursday.

Matches in the North-West (Severozapadna) Group were organized by the regional administrative football zone centre based in Veliko Tarnovo, belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). This group consists of teams located in the north-western part of Bulgaria, in the provinces of Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo and Veliko Tarnovo. Because no teams were relegated, as the 2019-2020 season was “frozen”, while promotion from the regional leagues was allowed and even encouraged by reducing the demands concerning junior teams, the number of teams in the North-West Group increased dramatically from 14 to 18, the highest number of participants in 13 years. Two second teams of top Bulgarian clubs, Etar 2 Veliko Tarnovo and Botev 2 Vratsa, were among the new teams.

In the beginning, the main contenders for promotion were considered Spartak Pleven, which have just been relegated from the Vtora Liga (Second League), as well as FK Sevlievo¸ Vihar Slavyanovo and OFK Pavlikeni, which were seen as having chances for promotion. Levski 2020 Lom, while newly admitted, seemed to be one of the potential candidates for the top spot. After the first half of the competition, Levski 2020 Lom turned out to be the most consistent team in the group and became the main favorites for promotion, having a 7 point gap over the second classified, FK Sevlievo. Vihar Slavyanovo, Yantra Polski Trambesh, Botev 2 Vratsa, Partizan Cherven Bryag, Spartak Pleven and OFK Pavlikeni also competed for the podium. In the second half of the season, the gap between Levski 2020 Lom and the other teams steadily increased, reaching 12 points with three rounds to go, on 16 May 2021, when Levski 2020 Lom were mathematically promoted by winning 1-0 over FK Sevlievo. The final gap between Levski 2020 Lom and second classified Vihar Slavyanovo was 18 points. Yantra Polski Trambesh had an excellent second half of the season, coming third, ahead of FK Sevlievo.

In the lower part of the table, the teams expected to be involved in the fight against relegation are some of the newly promoted teams, such as Peshtera Galata or OFK Levski, as well as some of the teams which have shown consistent weaknesses in the last years or more recently, such as  Bdin 1923 Vidin, OFK Tryavna, Parva Atomna Kozloduy or FK Drenovets. After the first half of the competition, Bdin 1923 Vidin and OFK Tryavna were last in the table and quite far from the rest of the group, including Peshtera Galata, Akademik Svishtov, Etar 2 Veliko Tarnovo, Parva Atomna Kozloduy and FK Drenovets. In the second half of the season, OFK Tryavna lost all matches and were mathemetically relegated with five rounds to go, on 30 April 2021, when they lost 8-0 away at Levski 2020 Lom (match was awarded as OFK Tryavna remained in just six players). Bdin 1923 Vidin had a surprising comeback in spring, and succeeded to avoid relegation by one point. In the last round, Peshtera Galata were confirmed as second to last, despite winning 2-1 over Botev 2 Vratsa, because both Etar 2 Veliko Tarnovo and Bdin 1923 Vidin also won and therefore remained above the relegation line. Despite finishing second to last, Peshtera Galata eventually remained in the Third League for the 2021-2022 season.
