Competition details and format

This was the 11th edition of the Colombian Youth League and the 2nd edition officially named “Súper Copa Juvenil FCF”. Just like before, it was organized by the Colombian Football Federation (FCF), in cooperation with Dimayor, the association of professional clubs in Colombia, and Difútbol, the association of amateur teams in Colombia. The competition involves all the U20 teams of the 36 professional clubs in Colombia, belonging to Dimayor, and a variable number of U20 teams of amateur clubs, belonging to Difútbol. As in 2018, the competition was divided into two divisions: the first, or “A” division, and the second, or “B” division. The “A” division comprised 60 teams, including all the U20 teams of the 36 professional clubs in Colombia, and 24 amateur U20 teams. 16 amateur teams came from the 2018 “A” Division of the Colombian Youth League, while 8 amateur teams promoted from the 2018 “B” Division of the Colombian Youth League, replacing the 8 amateur teams that were relegated. The number of relegated teams is usually 10, but 2 teams classified among the last 10 belonged to professional clubs, which cannot be relegated according to the rules of the competition.

Teams were allowed to enroll until the 28th of February 2019, with a list of 30 players, according to the following rules: 11 players born in 1999 or after, 13 players born in 2000 or after, 5 players born in 2001 or after (out of which at least 2 have to play in each match for the whole game) and 1 player born in 1997 or after, who is allowed to play only as a goalkeeper.

In the first stage (or group stage), the 60 teams in the “A” Division were distributed across five groups of 12 teams each, according to geographical criteria. The number of groups has been increased from 4 groups (each comprising 15 teams) in 2018, to 5 groups of 12 teams in 2019. In each group, the teams played each other twice, once at home and once away, in a double round robin championship including 22 rounds. The top three classified in each group, as well as the best fourth classified across all five groups, qualified for the second stage (or knock-out stage).

The 16 teams qualified for the second stage were classified according to the points obtained in the first stage (or group stage) and were paired accordingly: the best classified played against the 16th classified, the 2nd classified played against the 15th classified and so on, so that there were eight knock-out matches, in two legs, each team playing once home and once away, the better classified team playing the second leg at home. The eight qualified teams played the quarter-finals according to the same rules, which were also applied to the semifinals and the final.

As usual, the U20 teams of professional clubs dominated the competition, which started with the group stage on the 15th of March 2019. Atlético Nacional, the defending champions, finished first across all five groups, but were eliminated by Cúcuta Deportivo in the stage of the last 16, a replay of the 2018 final, this time with a different winner. Three U20 amateur teams qualified for the knock-out stage, Total Soccer, Costa Azul and Cyclones Cali. It is interesting to note that Costa Azul were eliminated in the last 16 by future champions Millonarios, even if they succeeded to win the first leg, while Cyclones Cali were eliminated in the same stage by future finalists Deportes Tolima, also after they won the first leg. It is also worth noting that these were the only defeats for the two finalists, Millonarios and Deportes Tolima, in the knock-out stage before reaching the final. Total Soccer were the only amateur team to reach the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by the same Deportes Tolima. In the semifinals, Millonarios crushed Unión Magdalena, while Deportes Tolima won against Independiente Santa Fe, the only professional team Tolima had to face in the knock-out stage before the final.

In the first leg of the final, Deportes Tolima and Millonarios drew 0-0. In the second leg, played in Bogotá on the 25th of November 2019, Millonarios won 3-1 and became champions for the second time, as they also won the Youth League in 2010. Throughout the whole competition, Millonarios lost only two games, one in the group stage (1-0 away at Tigres) and one in the knock-out stage (2-1 away at Costa Azul, an amateur team). As champions of the 2019 Colombian Youth League, they qualified for the 2020 U20 Copa Libertadores.

Relegation

At the end of the first stage (group stage), a relegation table is made, including only amateur teams, because professional teams cannot be relegated to the “B” Division. The table involves therefore the 24 amateur teams. The last 10 teams in this table are relegated to the “B” Division for the next season.

Rules for classification: 1) points; 2) goal difference; 3) goals scored; 4) drawing of lots.

The pairs for the second (knock-out) stage are made accordingly: the best classified team plays against the 16th classified, the 2nd classified plays against the 15th classified and so on. In the second stage (the last 16), the following pairs resulted:

(1)   Atlético Nacional (1) – Cúcuta Deportivo (16)

(2)   América de Cali (2) – Independiente Santa Fe (15)

(3)   Millonarios (3) – Costa Azul (14)

(4)   Deportes Tolima (4) – Cyclones Cali (13)

(5)   Boyacá Chicó (5) – Total Soccer (12)

(6)   Atlético Bucaramanga (6) – Fortaleza (11)

(7)   Envigado FC (7) – Deportivo Cali (10)

(8)   Barranquilla FC (8) – Unión Magdalena (9)

The better classified team plays the second leg at home. This rule is maintained throughout the whole knock-out stage.

For the quarter-finals, the pairs are made according to the following:

(1)   Winner of match 1 vs. Winner of match 8

(2)   Winner of match 2 vs. Winner of match 7

(3)   Winner of match 3 vs. Winner of match 6

(4)   Winner of match 4 vs. Winner of match 5

The same pairing system is usually also used for the semifinals.

In the knock-out stage, the rules for classification are the following: 1) points; 2) goal difference; 3) penalties. Unlike other systems, the number of away goals is not a criterion for classification in case of equality in terms of points and goal difference. No extra time is played either, penalties are to be executed at the end of the second leg if teams are tied.

Second stage (last 16)

First leg, 13-15 September 2019

Cúcuta Deportivo – Atlético Nacional 2-1

Independiente Santa Fe – América de Cali 4-1

Costa Azul – Millonarios 2-1

Cyclones Cali – Deportes Tolima 1-0

Total Soccer – Boyacá Chicó 1-0

Fortaleza – Atlético Bucaramanga 4-1

Deportivo Cali – Envigado 4-1

Unión Magdalena – Barranquilla 2-1

It is worth noting that the lower classified teams have all won the first leg, at home.

Second leg, 20-22 September 2019 (teams in bold qualified to the quarter-finals)

Atlético Nacional – Cúcuta Deportivo 1-0 (2-2 on aggregate, 2-4 at penalties)

América de Cali – Independiente Santa Fe 4-1 (5-5 on aggregate, 4-5 at penalties)

Millonarios – Costa Azul 2-0 (3-2 on aggregate)

Deportes Tolima – Cyclones Cali 4-0 (4-1 on aggregate)

Boyacá Chicó – Total Soccer 1-1 (1-2 on aggregate)

Atlético Bucaramanga – Fortaleza 2-2 (3-6 on aggregate)

Envigado FC – Deportivo Cali 0-1 (1-5 on aggregate)

Barranquilla – Unión Magdalena 1-0 (2-2 on aggregate, 2-3 at penalties)

Again, it is interesting to note that only two of the “favorites” classified to the quarter-finals, exactly the teams which would play the final: Millonarios and Deportes Tolima!

Quarter-finals

First leg, 28-29 September 2019

Cúcuta Deportivo – Unión Magdalena 1-0

Independiente Santa Fe – Deportivo Cali 1-0

Fortaleza – Millonarios 1-2

Second leg, 4-7 October 2019

Unión Magdalena – Cúcuta Deportivo 2-1 (2-2 on aggregate, 4-1 at penalties)

Deportivo Cali – Independiente Santa Fe 1-0 (1-1 on aggregate, 3-4 at penalties)

Millonarios – Fortaleza 2-2 (4-3 on aggregate)

Deportes Tolima – Total Soccer 1-1 (4-1 on aggregate)

It is remarkable that both Unión Magdalena and Independiente Santa Fe qualified so far only after the penalty shoot-outs.

Semifinals

First leg, 12-14 October 2019

Unión Magdalena – Millonarios 1-1

Independiente Santa Fe – Deportes Tolima 3-3

Second leg, 20 October 2019

Millonarios – Unión Magdalena 5-0 (6-1 on aggregate)

Deportes Tolima – Independiente Santa Fe 2-1 (5-4 on aggregate)

Final

Deportes Tolima – Millonarios 0-0

Second leg, 25 November 2019

Millonarios – Deportes Tolima 3-1 (3-1 on aggregate)

Millonarios became the 2019 champions of the Colombian Youth League, winning 3-1 on aggregate. Therefore, they represent Colombia in the U20 Copa Libertadores in 2020.
