Carlos Stein - Cusco FC 1-2 in the 7th round of the Peruvian Apertura (Liga 1)

Wednesday, the 19th of August 2020, 11 am local time (4 pm UTC), Videna Sports Complex, Lima (neutral ground), 7th round of the Peruvian Apertura (First Stage), Liga 1.

Finally, football returned to Peru as well, after more than 5 months. All matches are played on neutral ground, in Lima, and therefore there are no real "hosts" and "visitors".

Cusco FC started well the match against Carlos Stein, attacking and dominating, but Carlos Stein succeeded to score the first time they reached the opponents' half: Carlos Preciados took the ball from Edinson Chávez on the left, made a beautiful run, got into the area, and his shot was (un)luckily deflected by a defender: 1-0 (9'). Cusco FC restarted their offensive stance with increased enthusiasm, had a big chance by Ramúa and Carando (19') and finally equalized: Alfredo Ramúa crossed from the left side, José Rivera tried to push the ball into the net but instead Joaquín Aguirre scored into his own goal: 1-1 (23').

After the equalising goal, Cusco FC reduced their pace in the field, but still managed to have several opportunities. The biggest chance was missed by Carando, when he sent the ball into the side bar, after goalkeeper Ruíz made a great mistake by passing the ball to him.

In the second half, Carlos Stein started to improve their game and attacked more consistently. However, Cusco FC remained more dangerous, especially on the counterattack. Alfredo Ramúa provided an excellent cross for Aranda in the area, but his shot went to the side bar (58'). Just three minutes after, the same Alfredo Ramúa executed a corner kick from the right side, and Danilo Carando headed the ball in: 1-2 (61').

Carlos Stein took full dominion of the game and increased their pressure but were unable to beat Juan Pretel, Cusco's goalkeeper, in excellent form, having a few miraculous saves. Cusco FC could have scored again but did not profit from the ever larger spaces left by Carlos Stein in their defence.

Carlos Stein: Ruíz - Rostaing, Rivas, Rabanal, Aguirre - Manicero, Mejia (J. Gutiérrez 55'), Vargas, Preciado - Medrano (Vásquez 72'), J. Gonzales. Manager: Orlando Lavalle.

Cusco FC: Pretel - Chávez, Saravia, Delgado, Céspedes - Atoche, Valenzuela, Aranda (E. Gonzales 82') - Rivera (Pósito 90'+5'), Carando, Ramúa (P. Gutiérrez 68'). Manager: Carlos Ramacciotti.

Referee: Roberto Bruno Pérez.

Yellow cards: Manicero 42', J. Gutierrez 64' - Saravia 61'.

Cusco FC (re)started well, with a well-deserved win. Manager Carlos Ramacciotti and his staff have done a great job during the last months and the team seems prepared to fight for a position in the upper half of the table. The next game will be against Sport Boys, then there will be a much tougher match, against Alianza Lima. Alianza did not play in this round because of the COVID-19 cases found at Deportivo Binacional, their opponent, and a decision is to be made regarding this game.
