Ayacucho FC and Cusco FC drew 1-1 in the 15th round of the Peruvian Apertura

Thursday, the 1st of October 2020, 3 pm local time (8 pm UTC), Alberto Gallardo Stadium, Lima (neutral ground), 15th round of the Peruvian Liga 1, Apertura (or Stage 1).
Ayacucho FC and Cusco FC eventually drew 1-1 after a game which became very intense towards the end. Cusco FC started better and had a couple of chances, but the shots by Rivera and Carando were not strong enough for the goalkeeper Zamudio, while Chávez's shot went wide. In contrast, Ayacucho took the lead in one of their very few attacks: Murrugarra assisted Roberto Villamarín, who took over Céspedes and placed the ball around Pretel: 1-0 (30'). Cusco FC tried to equalize, but a long range shot by Sandoval missed the target (45').

In the second half, for the first 30 minutes, Cusco FC had a total dominion of the game, attacking even with the defenders, while Ayacucho FC defended well and did not venture too much in the opposite half. All the balls were searching for Carando in the area, but Cusco's striker was well marked and could not do much. However, a cross reached Carando and Quina touched the ball with his hand in the area: the referee gave a penalty for Cusco. Carando missed two penalties in a row in previous games, so Ramúa took the responsibility, but missed! However, the ball saved by Zamudio came back to him, so he redirected to Carranza, who scored: 1-1 (76'). Ayacucho's players and staff protested intensely, because Carranza had entered the area before Ramúa executed the penalty, but none of the referees noticed, so the goal counted.
In the last 15 minutes and the added time, both teams tried to score a decisive goal, Cusco FC were closer to do this, but missed.
Ayacucho: Zamudio - Rojas, Minaya, Quina, Cossío - Murrugarra, Aoki - R. Villamarín (Espinoza 87'), Sosa (Ardiles 83'), Olascuaga (L. Carranza 63') - J. Villamarín (Callorda 63'). Head coach: Gerardo Ameli.
Cusco: Pretel - Chávez. Gonzales, Saravia (Toledo 74'), Céspedes - Valenzuela, Atoche (Aranda 79') - Rivera (Carranza 58'), Ramúa, Sandoval (Gutiérrez 58') - Carando. Head coach: Francisco Melgar.
Referee: Fernando Legario (first half), Jordi Espinoza (second half) - because Fernando Legario suffered an injury.
Yellow cards: Murrugarra 34', Cossío 65', Sosa 73' - Atoche 35', Chávez 90'+2'.
Although the goal scored by Cusco should have been cancelled, they did not deserve to lose a game in which they attacked more than 80% of the time. Nevertheless, there was way too much chaos in the build up of attacks, and they rely on the individual qualities of the men in the attack, while the defence is poorly organized, and any attack of the opponent team might be a really dangerous one. Cusco FC had a run of four matches without a single win and is expected that interim coach Francisco Melgar will leave soon, as his term was mostly unsuccessful. The team badly needs a new head coach. Their next game will be on Monday, the 5th of October, against Carlos A. Mannucci. Ayacucho FC will also play on Monday against Melgar.
