First win of the season for Fayoum

On Saturday, 21 October 2023, in the second round of Group B of the Egyptian Second Division B, at Tersana Stadium in Giza (Cairo), Fayoum succeeded a narrow win over rivals Telephonat Beni Suef. It is interesting to note that in the past years the two teams shared the same home ground, Alassiouty Sports Resort (halfway between Fayoum and Beni Suef), but this season they both had to move out and find new home grounds, which they only found in Cairo (Ittihad El Shorta Stadium for Fayoum) or Giza (Tersana Stadium for Telephonat). So, actually both teams play their home matches... away.

In this case, Fayoum proved to be the better team, and they even led 3-0 at a certain point. In the first half, the only goal came after a set piece. A free kick was executed from the right side, the defenders were unable to clear, and Ahmed Salah, properly positioned near the penalty point, directed his shot to the far post: 0-1.

In the second half, the visitors doubled their advantage as Mohamed Morsi scored from inside the box after a perfect cross by Mohammad Al Saghir from the left: 0-2. Another run on the left led to a foul inside the box, and the referee awarded a penalty, converted by Fayoum captain Hammad Hassan Al Hanbali: 0-3.

Fayoum also missed other chances, by Ashraf Zidane, Karim Rashad or Tahir Saad.

Telephonat had some opportunities as well, but only scored in the final minutes of the game. Their first goal came from a penalty, seven minutes before the end: 1-3. The second goal was the result of a long attack, initially the goalkeeper Mohamad Kandil was able to save, but he was eventually beaten by one of Telephonat forwards, who scored from short range, right at the beginning of stoppage time: 2-3.

Fayoum is in third place with 4 points, the same number of points as the top two teams, Tersana and Beni Mazar. Tomorrow, Friday, 27 October, starting at 2:30 pm local time, Fayoum will face Beni Mazar in the most important match of round 3, at Ittihad El Shorta Stadium in Cairo.
