Competition details and format

The Slovak 3. Liga, also named III. liga, represents the third tier in the football system of Slovakia. The 2020-2021 season was the 28th since Slovakia separated from the Czech Republic to become an independent state in 1993, after the previous season, 2019-2020, had been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season started on the 1st of August 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, applying certain measures to prevent infection. On the 1st of October 2020, the Slovak authorities took further measures, which involved more restrictions. Spectators were not allowed anymore in the stands, and teams had to make tests for players and staff before each game. A number of games were postponed in the first half of October 2020. Then, on the 15th of October, it was decided that all sporting competitions in Slovakia had to stop, so the 3. Liga was also interrupted and all matches starting with round 13 were postponed indefinitely, as the pandemic took a turn for the worse in Slovakia. The competition resumed only at the end of May 2021, and only the remaining matches in the first half of the season were actually played. The season ended in mid-June after just 15 rounds.

There were 64 teams which competed in the 3. Liga in 2020-2021 and, just like in previous years, they were divided into 4 groups: Bratislava (16 teams), West (Západ, 16 teams), Centre (Stred, 16 teams) and East (Východ, 16 teams). The competition format was initially established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds. However, due to the long break imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, only the first half of the season was played, therefore the competition format was eventually a single round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams once, a total of just 15 rounds. The winners of every group promoted to the 2. Liga, while the worse classified teams were relegated to the 4. Liga at the end of the season, their number (usually two) depending on the group and circumstances. They are replaced by teams relegated from 2. Liga and teams promoted from the 4. Liga. However, due to the cancellation of the 2019-2020 season, no teams promoted and no teams were relegated, so the 2020-2021 season started with the same teams as 2019-2020, at least theoretically. However, some teams withdrew and had to be replaced, taking into account the final tables of the last official season, 2018-2019. The games in each group were organized by the four regional football associations, under the general supervision of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ).

Matches in the East (Východ) Group were organized by the Eastern Slovakia Football Association (VsFZ, Východoslovenský Futbalový Zväz). This group consisted of teams located in Prešov and Košice regions in the eastern part of Slovakia. The season started on the 1st of August 2020 and ended on 13 June 2021. 17 rounds were scheduled to be played between August and November 2020, of which only 12 rounds were effectively played before the 15th of October, when the competition was totally interrupted, while some matches in the 11th and 12th rounds were also postponed in the first half of October 2020. The remaining rounds (13th, 14th and 15th) and the postponed matches were played in May and June 2021. Just like in the other groups, the season was considered as complete after just 15 rounds, half of what was initially scheduled.

At the beginning of the season, the main contenders for promotion were 1. FC Tatran Prešov, one of the traditionally strong teams in Slovakia, as well as ŠK Odeva Lipany, which were also the strongest teams during the cancelled 2019-2020 season. MFK Vranov nad Topľou and FK Humenné were also usually considered among the favorites to a top position in this group. Quite surprisingly, FK Humenné had an excellent start and were in top position when the competition was interrupted in mid-October. They were followed by 1. FC Tatran Prešov and ŠK Odeva Lipany, while MFK Vranov nad Topľou were already too far behind to think of promotion. In the remaining rounds, played in May and June, FK Humenné won all the matches, and were mathematically promoted on 5 June 2020, when they won 4-0 at home over 1. FK Svidník in the second-to-last round. They finished the season unbeaten, with an exceptional record (14 wins and 1 draw), and promoted in the 2. Liga after 12 years. ŠK Odeva Lipany finished second, also unbeaten, but six points behind FK Humenné. 1. FC Tatran Prešov finished third only due to the results in head-to-head matches, after another disappointing season.

The usual number of relegated teams from the East Group is two, as they are replaced by the winners of 4. Liga North and 4. Liga South belonging to the Eastern Slovakia Football Association. In the beginning, the newly-admitted teams, such as MŠK Spišské Podhradie and Slávia TU Košice, as well as FK Sobrance-Sobranecko, seemed to be the most vulnerable and most likely to be involved in the fight to avoid relegation. However, Slávia TU Košice had very good results and, also due to their partnership with FC Košice, finished fourth, among the best teams in this group. MŠK Spišské Podhradie, after a weak start, began to climb in the table. Therefore, the teams that have shown consistent weaknesses in the beginning of the season and feared relegation include FK NOVES Spišská Nová Ves, MFK Slovan Giraltovce, FK POKROK SEZ Krompachy, ŠK Milenium 2000 Bardejovská Nová Ves and 1. FK Svidník, to which one may add FK Sobrance-Sobranecko. When the competition was interrupted, 1. FK Svidník and ŠK Milenium 2000 Bardejovská Nová Ves were last and second-to-last, respectively. ŠK Milenium 2000 Bardejovská Nová Ves lost all the remaining matches and finished last. They were already relegated before the last round, as Slovan Giraltovce won in the penultimate match, 1-0 away at Tesla Stropkov, and they lost 4-1 away to Slávia TU Košice, which increased the gap between the two teams to 4 points with just one match remaining. 1. FK Svidník were just two points behind MFK Slovan Giraltovce before the last round, but they also lost their final match, 5-2 to Slávia TU Košice, while Slovan Giraltovce won anyway. 1. FK Svidník remained second-to-last, because ŠK Milenium 2000 Bardejovská Nová Ves also lost the last match, 3-2 to FK Spišská Nová Ves. This fact proved decisive afterwards. Both teams were initially relegated to 4. Liga, but when FK Družstevník Plavnica announced that they would not continue in the 3. Liga for the 2021-2022, 1. FK Svidník were reprieved from relegation as the best classified team among the relegated ones and accepted back for the 2021-2022 season.

Team changes from 2019-2020

Technically, there should have been no changes from 2019-2020 season, because it was cancelled and no teams were either promoted or relegated. However, two teams withdrew and had to be replaced, and one team changed its name and location. The last completed season of the 4. Liga, 2018-2019, was taken into account to establish the two teams to replace the withdrawn teams. Because the winners of the two 4. Liga groups had been already promoted to the 3. Liga for the 2019-2020 season, the two runners-up were considered to replace the withdrawn teams. It is interesting to note that both teams, MŠK Spišské Podhradie and Slávia TU Košice, were leaders of their 4. Liga groups when the 2019-2020 season was stopped and then cancelled.
