Cusco FC won 1-0 over Alianza Lima and is 3 points away from the lead in Group B of the Peruvian First Division - Stage 2 (Clausura)

Monday, the 16th of November 2020, 3.30 pm local time (8.30 pm UTC), Iván Elías Moreno Stadium (neutral ground), Lima, Peru, the 6th round of Stage 2 (Clausura), Group B, Peruvian First Division.
Cusco FC ended their winless run with a deserved 1-0 win over Alianza Lima, one of the big / important teams in Peru which are now in a delicate position close to the relegation area, just three points above Carlos Stein and the relegation line, with three rounds to go. On the other hand, Cusco FC is now mathematically out of this fight for relegation and dare think about a place ensuring their next year participation to a continental cup, and still have (small) chances for the national title! They are only three points below Universidad César Vallejo, leaders of Group B, and their head-to-head match will be next week; in case Cusco FC wins this group, they will play the Stage 2 (Clausura) final and, if they win, they will qualify for the championship play-offs, and, even if they will not get the title, they would still qualify for the next year Copa Libertadores. They are also three points below Alianza Universidad, currently eighth place in the aggregate table, and if they succeed to climb to this position (or higher), they would qualify for the next year Copa Sudamericana. There are only three rounds to go, so everything will be played in these three rounds.
The match had two different halves. In the first half, both teams tried to overcome the opponent. Alianza had the ball more, but their attacks were rather feeble. On the other hand, Cusco FC proved to be more powerful in attack, especially due to Miguel Carranza on the right wing. A pass from Carranza enabled Carando to be one on one with the goalkeeper, but his shot went over the crossbar (35'). Not much later, a cross from Boló was headed in by Gonzales from close range: 1-0 (41'). It was the first goal for Gonzales (a very promising midfielder) in the First Division.

In the second half, Alianza Lima did everything to come back in the game, at least to equalize. Cusco FC also had a couple of chances - another header by Gonzales, denied by Butrón, and a long range shot by Ramúa, above the crossbar. However, the pressure of Alianza intensified towards the end of the game, but Cusco defended well. Actually, Alianza did not have any clear goal opportunity. A shot by Rubio (86'), saved by Pretel, and another shot by Arroé, which went wide, in the last moments of stoppage time, were the only chances they had.
Cusco: Pretel - Chávez, Saravia, Paniagua, Céspedes - Atoche, Gonzales - Boló (Rivera 61'), Ramúa (Guidino 69'), Carranza - Carando (Pósito 84'). Manager: Carlos Ramacciotti.
Alianza Lima: Butrón - Aguilar (Medina 74'), Salazar, A. Rodríguez (Da Silva 74'), Caro (Gómez 46') - Beltrán - Mora, Cruzado (Arroé 25'), Ballón (Cornejo 63') - Ascues, Rubio. Manager: Daniel Ahmed.
Referee: Bruno Pérez.
Yellow cards: Atoche 88' - Beltrán 13', Caro 40'.

Before the game, another good news arrived: Argentinian manager Carlos Ramacciotti and his team had their contracts extended for 2021. It is a sign that the owners of Cusco FC understood the need for the manager's continuity, in order to get better results.
In the next round, on Friday, Cusco FC will face Ayacucho FC in a derby which might decide the team that will fight for the top spot in Group B, along with current leaders, Universidad César Vallejo. On Saturday, Alianza Lima will play against Sport Boys in a bitter derby of teams trying to avoid relegation.
