There are less than two weeks until the start of a new season of the Egyptian Second Division. Due to the impact of the COVID-19, no teams have been relegated from the 2019-2020 Second Division and 12 teams have been promoted from the Third Division, increasing the number of teams from 36 (divided into three groups of 12 teams each) to 48 (divided into three groups of 16 teams each). In fact, it is a return to the situation which existed in 2017-2018.
The Egyptian FA has established the composition of the groups and, as usual, teams in Upper and Middle Egypt were included in Group A. As no teams from this region were relegated from the Premier League, five newly-promoted teams were included in this group. On Wednesday, the 11th of November 2020, the draw took place, and the following matches resulted for the first round in Group A:
Assiut Petroleum - KIMA Aswan
Shabab Qena - Assiut Cement
Shabab Sumasta - Tahta
Al Dukhan - Beni Suef
Aluminium - Fayoum
Telephonat Beni Suef - Media
Sohag - Dayrout
Al Minya - Qena SC
At the end of the season, the top classified in each group will promote to the Premier League, while the last four classified will be relegated to the Third Division. The main candidates for promotion in Group A, judging from the recently finished season, would be Beni Suef and Aluminium, which both fought for promotion until the very last round. However, many surprises are indeed possible. It is interesting to note that Fayoum will face Aluminium in the first round for the third season in a row (this time away).
The 2020-2021 season is scheduled to begin on the 25th of November 2020. The Egyptian FA have just extended the transfer period until the very last day before the start, the 24th of November 2020.
