New manager Stanislav Baran led 1. FK Svidník to essential 1-0 win over Spišské Podhradie as the Slovak Third League resumes

Sunday, 23 May 2021, 5 pm local time (3 pm UTC), Mestský futbalový štadion, Svidník, Slovakia, 11th round of the Slovak Third League - East Group (3. Liga - Východ).

The Slovak Third League resumed on Sunday with just four games postponed from round 11, initially scheduled in October 2020. After a 7-month long break due to COVID-19 pandemic and only about two or three weeks of training, amateur footballers had to play again competitive matches, and pressure is high because these matches might prove crucial for their objectives, as only the first half of the season would be played. This means that each team would only play three to five matches. 1. FK Svidník would play just four, three of them at home.

So, this match against Spišské Podhradie was the first of these four essential matches for the survival in the Third League, as 1. FK Svidník were last in the classification before these games.

New manager Stanislav Baran made an excellent job and prepared well this match, which started perfectly for 1. FK Svidník: Michal Tokar's long range shot surprised the visitors' goalkeeper: 1-0 (1'). This proved to be the only goal of the match, despite several other chances that the home side had.

New manager Stanislav Baran prepared well this match for 1. FK Svidník

The visitors tried to gain control of the game, especially in the first half, when they had more ball possession but rarely approached the opponents' goal. On the other hand, 1. FK Svidník defended very well and had several good opportunities. Michal Tokar's free kick hit the crossbar (29') and Jozef Sova's header was saved by the goalkeeper (40').

In the second half, 1. FK Svidník played even more aggresively and did not let the opponents built anything. The match was very fragmented, and there were rough tackles and disputes for the ball in midfield. Towards the end of the game, 1. FK Svidník had several more chances, which could seal the win earlier, but they were missed by Marián Hlavka (75'), Jozef Sova (84') and Róbert Potoma (90').

Overall, this was a clear and well-deserved victory for 1. FK Svidník, which really needed the three points, while the visitors are in a safe position.

Svidník: Mikluš - A. Košč (Makara 89'), Hudák, Zapotocký, K. Matkobiš - Ducár (Potoma 64'), Paňko, Tokar, Gajdoš (Kočan 80') - Sova, Hlávka. Manager: Stanislav Baran.
