Competition details and format
The Slovak Third League, or 3. Liga (in Slovak), also named III. liga, represents the third tier in the football system of Slovakia. The 2021-2022 season is the 29th since Slovakia separated from the Czech Republic to become an independent state in 1993, and it comes after two consecutive seasons deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The season started on the 31st of July 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, applying certain measures to prevent infection.
There are 66 teams which compete in the Third League in 2021-2022 and, just like in previous years, they are divided into 4 groups: Bratislava (16 teams), West (Západ, 18 teams), Centre (Stred, 16 teams) and East (Východ, 16 teams). The competition format is established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 30 rounds (34 rounds in the case of the West Group). The winners of every group promote to the Second League (2. Liga). At the end of this season, due to the new structure of the Third League and Fourth League starting with 2022-2023, only the upper half of the teams will remain in the Third League, while the teams in the lower half would be relegated to the Fourth League, with the bottom team relegated to the Fifth League. The games in each group are organized by the four regional football associations, under the general supervision of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ).
Matches in the East (Východ) Group are organized by the Eastern Slovakia Football Association (VsFZ, Východoslovenský Futbalový Zväz). This group consists of teams located in Prešov and Košice regions in the eastern part of Slovakia. The season started on the 31st of July 2021 and is scheduled to end in June 2022. Initially, 17 rounds were scheduled to be played between July and November 2021, while the other 13 remaining rounds were scheduled to be played between March and June 2022. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, as the situation got worse in October 2021, it was decided that only half of the rounds (15) would be played in 2021, and that the week-ends in November would be used for already postponed matches, to make sure that all matches of the first half are played before the end of the year. Nevertheless, at the beginning of November 2021, it was decided that all postponed matches be played in 2022, and no more matches were scheduled in 2021. All postponed matches (except one) are scheduled in February and March 2022, ahead of the start of the second half of the season. The second half of the season is scheduled in spring and summer 2022 as well, depending on the pandemic situation.
The main contenders for promotion were initially considered 1. FC Tatran Prešov, one of the traditionally strong teams in Slovakia, as well as ŠK Odeva Lipany, which were also the best teams during the previous season, except for the winners FK Humenné. MFK Vranov nad Topľou, Slávia TU Košice, MŠK Tesla Stropkov and FK Spišská Nová Ves were also considered among the favorites to a top position. While relegated from the Second League, FK Poprad were not taken into account among the favourites to promote this season. Surprisingly, FK Spišská Nová Ves had an excellent first half of the season, and finished first before the winter break, two points ahead of the main favourites, 1. FC Tatran Prešov, and with a game in hand. ŠK Odeva Lipany were third, six points behind the leaders, followed by Slávia TU Košice and MŠK Tesla Stropkov. Despite their fifth position during the winter break, MŠK Tesla Stropkov also had a very good first half of the season, and they were most of the time in second position, losing pace towards the end of the first half of the season. However, they still have two postponed matches to be played, unlike most of the other contenders for the top spot and may climb more in the table, although it is hard to believe that they could challenge the leaders.
The number of relegated teams from the East Group would increase this season, due to the restructuring of the Third League and Fourth League starting with 2022-2023. As a result, almost half of the teams would be relegated to the Fourth League at the end of the season, while the bottom classified team would be relegated to the Fifth League. The newly-promoted teams, OFK - SIM Raslavice and OŠK Rudňany, were considered among the most vulnerable and most likely to be involved in the fight to avoid relegation. However, there were also other teams that have shown consistent weaknesses lately and fear relegation, including MŠK Spišské Podhradie, MFK Slovan Giraltovce, FK Sobrance-Sobranecko, FK POKROK SEZ Krompachy and 1. FK Svidník. At winter break, 1. FK Svidník were in the last place, not winning a single point, and are the main candidates for relegation despite having three postponed matches to play. Right above them, MŠK Spišské Podhradie and FK POKROK SEZ Krompachy also gathered very few points and would fight to avoid the relegation spot, with some postponed matches to play as well. Newly-promoted OFK - SIM Raslavice and OŠK Rudňany, as well as FK Sobrance-Sobranecko, are as well involved in the fight to avoid relegation. The lower half of the table also include MFK Slovan Giraltovce and TJ Mladost’ Kalša.
