Cusco FC in big trouble, Deportivo Municipal practically saved

Cusco FC - Deportivo Municipal 3-5 (0-2)

Céspedes 48', Rizzo 80' (penalty), Royón 90'+3' - Bazán 10', 44', É. Ramírez 50', A. Rodríguez 55', 68'.

Monday, 18 October 2021, 11 am local time (4 pm UTC), Miguel Grau Stadium, Callao, Peru, 15th round of Stage 2, Peruvian First Division (Liga 1).

The match was decisive for both teams, as they fight to avoid relegation. Deportivo Municipal clearly won, and are now pretty much out of trouble, while Cusco FC are in a very difficult situation, in relegation position with two rounds to go, and difficult matches ahead.

The game started well for Deportivo Municipal, and they took the lead quite early, as Jorge Bazán finished from inside the box a pass from Ovelar: 0-1 (10'). Once again, Cusco had to come back in the game after the opponents score first, and they did try in the first half, but missed several chances. Their biggest opportunity was a penalty awarded to them for a foul inside the box, missed however by Édson Aubert, or if you want, saved by Melián (42'). This was one of the psychological moments of the match, because immediately after Jorge Bazán doubled the advantage for Municipal after a beautiful pass through from Jhon Vega: 0-2 (44').

In the second half, Cusco made a tremendous pressure from the beginning, and missed a great chance in the first minute. Then, Rivera sent the ball into the crossbar, from where it came back to Céspedes, whose right-footed shot from the edge of the box went in: 1-2 (48').

It looked like Cusco were back in the game, but Municipal responded very quickly, by means of Érinson Ramírez, whose precise long-range shot found the target: 1-3 (50'). It was the second psychological moment of the game, because Cusco FC players fell into a sort of depression and their game suffered extensively in the following minutes. Deportivo Municipal took full advantage of the situation, and scored other two goals, both by Alexis Rodríguez (55' and 68'): 1-5.

It could have been the highest difference this season, but Deportivo Municipal lowered their standards towards the end of the match, allowing Cusco FC to balance the game. A shot hit Saravia's hand in the box and the referee awarded a second penalty for Cusco, this time transformed by Gonzalo Rizzo: 2-5 (80').

The referee granted four minutes of stoppage time, and in the third one Abisab found Rizzo (!) in the box, who lobbed the goalkeeper and Royón made it sure on goal line: 3-5 (90'+3').

Cusco FC: Nicosia - Velásquez (Aubert 34', Royón 66'), Rizzo, Figueroa, Céspedes - Gonzales, Tello (Ramúa 46'), Abisab - Rivera (Rengifo 66'), Montes, Espinoza (Carranza 46'). Manager: Marcelo Grioni.

Deportivo Municipal: Melián (Prieto 71') - Medina, Saravia, Cardoza (Caballero 71'), Yovera (Aguilar 71') - Peña, Vega - Bazán (Ascues 83'), É. Ramírez, A. Rodríguez (Arakaki 83') - Ovelar. Manager: Hernán Lisi.

Referee: Kevin Ortega.

Yellow cards: Yovera 16', Cardoza 41', Saravia 79', Vega 86', Ascues 87'.

Unfortunately, Cusco FC look like a team which is already doomed to be relegated to the Second Division. Their game was extremely poor, and one has to think that this was a decisive game. Their final two games would be against Universitario de Deportes, one of the strongest teams in Peru, and Sport Huancayo. They need to win both of them and to hope that the other results turn in their favour to escape relegation. The match against Universitario would be very tough, as the opponents struggle to classify third or fourth, to participate in the next year Copa Libertadores. If Cusco does not take at least one point in that game, preferably all three, they might be already relegated before the last match.

The situation is quite different for Deportivo Municipal, which would be saved mathematically if they win any of the upcoming two matches, against Melgar and Alianza Atlético. Even a draw might be enough if the other results are in their favour.

In the upper part of the table, Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal are now mathematically classified for the 2021 season finals.
