A penalty in stoppage time decided the match in favour of Fayoum SC

Fayoum SC - M.S. Naser Mallawi 1-0 (0-0)

Ahmed Mohamed Roni 90'+2' (penalty)

Saturday, 29 January 2022, 2:30 pm local time (12:30 pm UTC), Alassiouty Sport Resort, Fayoum, Egypt, the 16th round of the Egyptian Second Division, Group A.

After many draws against the other newly-promoted teams at home, Fayoum eventually managed to win such a match, although this was disputed in rather unfavourable conditions for the home side. Fayoum had quite an interesting line-up, given that 22 players missed as compared to the previous games: 9 were transferred to other teams during the transfer period preceding this game, while 13 are injured or unavailable for different reasons.

However, those who did have an opportunity to play proved that they deserve to be in the squad, and they won against all odds. Naser Mallawi came with a new manager, Ibrahim Sedky, and had some excellent opportunities, especially in the second half, but they were unable to convert at least one.

In the first half, the match was very much disputed in the midfield, with few goal opportunities.

In the second half, the number of chances increased for both teams. Mallawi had a handful of such chances, missed by Abdelrahman (a shot in the crossbar), Anwar, Essien or Qalash. Fayoum had also several good opportunities to break the deadlock.

The game was seemingly going to end in a goalless draw, when a deep pass from the Fayoum midfield found one of their wingers in the box, and a clumsy challenge from one of the Mallawi defenders determined the referee to correctly award a penalty for Fayoum. Ahmed Mohamed Roni took the responsibility and scored: 1-0 (90'+2').

With these three points, Fayoum climbed into fifth position once again. Naser Mallawi remained in the relegation area.

In the next round, two weeks from this one, Fayoum will play away at Dayrout, while Mallawi will face Aluminium at home. Hopefully, some of the Fayoum players will recover until then.

The next round also schedules two very interesting matches for the top of the group, involving the first four classified teams, playing against each other. Especially the match between Aswan and El Minya might prove very important in the fight for promotion.
