Fayoum SC - Markaz Shabab Tamya 1-1 (0-1)
Alaa Metwally 53' - Ahmed Crespo 12'
Saturday, 1 January 2022, 2:30 pm local time (12:30 UTC), Alassiouty Sport Resort Stadium, Fayoum, Egypt, 13th round of the Egyptian Second Division, Group A.
The Egyptian FA seems to have no problems in scheduling official matches on New Year's Eve, so the local derby between Fayoum and Tamya (just like 8 other matches of the round) was played on the 1st of January at Alassiouty Sport Resort. We wonder if the teams prepared the match in advance and the players spent the New Year's celebrations together, or they were with their families and rushed immediately after to the game?
One thing is certain: Fayoum SC, despite their good campaign this season so far, has a problem when playing against newly-promoted teams. In the previous three matches against such teams (which are all classified in the lower half of the table), they lost away at Naser Mallawi, and they drew 1-1 at home against both Al Madina Al Monawara and El Badari. The same result was finally achieved against M.S. Tamya, the only other team of Fayoum Governorate in the Second Division. Unfortunately, the location of the match (Alassiouty Sport Resort) and the lack of an audience diminished the usual atmosphere related to such a local derby.
The visitors started the match very well, attacking fiercely, very much to the surprise of Fayoum. They had some chances, and eventually scored, also due to a surprising execution of a free kick from their own half, which enabled Ahmed Crespo to be one on one with the goalkeeper, to dribble him and to score: 0-1 (12'). It didn't stop there, though. A few minutes later, after a corner, Tamya scored again, but the goal was cancelled for an offside (19'), which was indeed the case in the second instance, after Fayoum goalkeeper's initial save.
However, Fayoum turned the game and started to push forward, while the visitors made a step back to defend their advantage. Abd Elsalam Gresha had a great opportunity for Fayoum, but his shot went wide (21'). Fayoum's pressure intensified towards the end of the first half, but their attacks were pretty much limited in searching for Alaa Metwally with long high crosses inside the box, but the massive forward was well apprehended by the Tamya defenders, and could not do much, but had some chances, the biggest of which came in the 38th minute.

In the second half, everyone expected Fayoum to continue their offensive, but instead Tamya had the first opportunity right after the start (47'). Nevertheless, indeed Fayoum resumed their attacks, and their efforts paid off: Abdel Moati Mohamed crossed from the left and Alaa Metwally's header from short range went in: 1-1 (53').
After the goal, the match became more balanced. Fayoum controlled the midfield, had the possession and led most of the offensive actions, but Tamya also responded on sharp counterattacks. Abd Elsalam Gresha (64') and Alaa Metwally (in several occasions) could have scored the winning goal for Fayoum, but missed good chances. Pressure mounted, but in the final minutes the visitors had an unexpected comeback in the attack and it was their turn to look for the winning goal, which however did not come for any of the teams.
Fayoum: Islam Emad Risha - Ali Abo Elela, Hamad Hassan (Ahmed Saber Mansheya 5'), Mahmoud Kamal "Schmeichel", Ali El-Sakhr - Mohamed Morsi (Sayed Kanaria 75'), Salah Rifaat - Ahmed Salah, Abdel Moati Mohamed, Abd Elsalam Gresha - Alaa Metwally (? 85'). Manager: Saeed Sobhi.
The match was broadcasted live by Tamiya FC on Facebook, and is also available on YouTube.
In the next round, Fayoum will play another local derby, away at Beni Suef, while Tamya will face Aluminium at home. These are going to be very tough games for both teams.
