Monday, the 18th of November 2019, 15:00 local time (20:00 UTC), Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Stadium, Cusco, Peru, the 16th round of the Peruvian Liga 1 - Clausura.
The last match of the 16th round, the second to last match day in the 2019 Peruvian Liga 1, proved to be a very easy one for Real Garcilaso. Union Comercio have become over night a serious candidate for relegation, after the Justice Board of the Peruvian Football Federation decided a series of sanctions against the team, including a 4 point deduction in the aggregate table - just enough to put them in big trouble. The shock could have been the cause for a very weak game by the players of Union Comercio, who must thank their goalkeeper for saving lots of goals.
Real Garcilaso, in their last official match at home in 2019, won easily. They needed to win in order to stay on the sixth place, and keep good chances of a spot in the next year Copa Sudamericana. Things were quite clear after less than 20 minutes. A ground level cross by Velasquez from the right side reached the centre of the area, Carando, well marked, left the ball to pass to unmarked Rengifo, whose shot hit the target: 1-0 (13'). Just a few minutes after, another cross by the same Velasquez from the right, this time from long range and very high, was remarkably well reached by Carando, who headed it in from inside the area: 2-0 (17').

The game lost a bit of pace, the visitors had more ball possession, without any danger for Ferreyra, Real Garcilaso goalkeeper. The home side played mostly on the counterattack. The same happened for most of the second half, and the visitors received a new blow when Morales received a second yellow card and was sent off (53'). The game turned even more in favour of Real Garcilaso, and Ruiz, Union Comercio goalkeeper, had to make several outstanding saves. He could do nothing however when Lecaros progressed inside the area and sent the ball home with a left-foot shot from the right side: 3-0 (70'). Again Lecaros succeeded to pass through the opposite defense on the right side and passed to Archimbaud in the 6 m area, just in front of the goal, to put it in: 4-0 (79').
Real Garcilaso: Ferreyra - Arsimendi, Canova (Rivas 77'), Quina, Benincasa - Lecaros (Uscamayta 80'), Velasquez, Archimbaud, Souza - Rengifo (Nunez 63'), Carando. Head coach: Juan Chumpitaz.
Union Comercio: Ruiz - Garro, Renteria, Davila, Rabanal - Marcos, Morales, Dioses (Rivera 29') - Casique (Velarde 46'), Di Vanni, Carranza (Vasquez 61'). Head coach: Walter Aristizabal.
Referee: Yovani Quevedo.
Yellow cards: Canova 42' - Morales 52', 53'.
Red card: Morales 53' (for the second yellow card).
In the last round, all matches will played on Sunday, the 24th of November. Deportivo Binacional and Sporting Cristal are already sure of their presence in the play-off, but Alianza Lima and Universitario still have chances to win the Clausura and to get to the play-offs. Alianza Lima are in fact leaders of Clausura and a win in the last round, away at Union Comercio, will make them definitive winners of Clausura and therefore participants in the play-offs for the title.
However, Union Comercio also need to win their last match, if they want to remain in Liga 1. Even a win might not be enough, if all the other teams involved (Sport Boys and Deportivo Municipal) also win. So the match between Union Comercio and Alianza Lima might prove decisive for establishing the second relegated team (the first one is Pirata FC, already knowing their fate for a few weeks) and the Clausura winners.
In case Alianza Lima are unable to win, Sporting Cristal and Universitario have their chances to become winners of Clausura. Sporting Cristal will play away at Deportivo Binacional, a very difficult game for them, and a sort of probable play-off final in advance. Both teams are qualified for the play-offs, but there might be no semifinal if Sporting Cristal win the Clausura. Then, the two teams will play directly the final for the national title. Otherwise, if Alianza Lima or Universitario win the Clausura, then there will be a semifinal between one of them and (most likely) Sporting Cristal.
Universitario have the smallest chances, because they need to win at home over Real Garcilaso and have to rely on Alianza Lima to lose and Sporting Cristal not to win in order to become winners of Clausura. Real Garcilaso will not be an easy opponent, as they also need a point in order to be sure of their place in the next year Copa Sudamericana. Actually, it is probable that Real Garcilaso will make a good game, given their recent series of excellent results. The only teams that might overtake them are Ayacucho and FBC Melgar, but both have to win and Real Garcilaso to lose in order for the Cusco team to be out of the South American competitions the next year. Universidad Cesar Vallejo and Carlos A. Mannucci both have theoretical chances of reaching the seventh place, the last one available for a spot in the next year Copa Sudamericana. Sport Huancayo are sure of their presence there next year, but they might even get to the fourth place and to Copa Libertadores, in case they win and Universitario lose to Real Garcilaso.
