Competition
details and format
The Bulgarian
Treta Liga (also known as the Third Amateur Football League and formerly as V
AFG) represents the third tier in the football system of Bulgaria and the
highest level of amateur football in Bulgaria. In 2018-2019 there was the 69th
season since the creation of the third level division in Bulgaria in 1950 and
the third season under the name Treta Liga since the reorganization of the
football leagues in Bulgaria in 2016.
There were 65
teams which competed in the Treta Liga in 2018-2019 and, just like in previous
years, they were divided geographically into 4 groups: North-East (Severoiztochna,
13 teams), North-West (Severozapadna, 16 teams), South-West (Yugozapadna, 18 teams) and South-East
(Yugoiztochna, 18 teams). Just like
before, the competition format was established as a double (home and away)
round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home
and once away, a total of 34 rounds for the South-West and South-East groups,
30 rounds for the North-West Group and 26 rounds for the North-East Group. In
the North-East Group, after the initial 26 rounds, there was a play-off
including the best 6 teams, which played each other once in a single
round-robin championship, and a play-out including the last 7 teams, which
played a similar single round-robin championship.
The first half
of the season (rounds 1 to 15) was played in summer and autumn, in the
North-West Group from 12 August 2018 to 11 November 2018, with some postponed
matches played on 17 and 18 November 2018, while the second half of the season
(rounds 16 to 30) was played in spring, from the 3rd of March 2019
to the 2nd of June 2019. Round 16, initially scheduled for 24
February 2019, was postponed for 13 March 2019 because of the bad weather.
Between the two halves of the season, there was a large winter break when
transfers were allowed.
The winners of
every group were promoted to the Vtora Liga (Second Professional Football
League), while the worse classified teams are relegated to the regional (oblast) leagues at the end of the season,
their number (usually two) depending on the group and circumstances. They are
replaced by teams relegated from the Vtora Liga and teams promoted from the regional
leagues. The games in each group are organized by the four regional administrative
football zone centres, belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). Most of
the matches are scheduled on Sunday afternoon. Very few games are played on
Sunday morning, on Saturdays, Fridays and exceptionally on Mondays. There are a
few mid-week rounds, when matches are played either Wednesday or Thursday.
Matches in the North-West
(Severozapadna) Group are organized
by the regional administrative football zone centre based in Veliko Tarnovo,
belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). This group consists of teams
located in the north-western part of Bulgaria, in the provinces of Vidin,
Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo and Veliko Tarnovo.
The main
contenders for promotion were Spartak
Pleven, relegated from the Vtora Liga in 2017, and Yantra Gabrovo, which promoted to the Treta Liga in 2016 and are a
phoenix club of the former team with the same name which went bankrupt in 2012.
FK Sevlievo were also considered to
have chances for promotion but only finished third. Bdin 1923 Vidin had a very strong start but gave up fighting for
promotion before the end of the first half of the season and had a very weak
second half of the season. Spartak
Pleven started with four wins but then they lost two matches and drew one.
However, beginning with the 8th round, they had a spectacular
winning run of 19 matches, which allowed them to be comfortably on top of the
group. Spartak Pleven promoted mathematically after round 28, on 19 May 2019,
when they won 5-0 at home against FK Pavlikeni, maintaining a 7 point gap in
front of Yantra Gabrovo with two rounds remaining.
In the lower
part of the table, four teams were involved in the fight against relegation to
the regional leagues: Yantra Polski
Trambesh, OFK Levski 2007, Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo and OFK Tryavna. Although initially
classified in the relegation area, Partizan
Cherven Bryag had a good second half of the season and reached the middle
of the table at the end. OFK Levski 2007 had a very poor first half of the
season, including 11 consecutive defeats and a winless run of 14 matches and
seemed to be certain of relegation. Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo were not much in
front. However, OFK Levski 2007 had a very good second half of the season and
closed the gap between them and the other three teams. All four teams managed
to keep intact their chances of survival until the very last round. In the last
round, in a decisive match meant to establish at least one of the relegated
teams, OFK Tryavna won 1-0 away to Yantra Polski Trambesh, saving
themselves and sending the latter to the regional leagues. Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo also managed to win 2-1 at home against FK
Sevlievo and escaped relegation because OFK
Levski 2007 lost 3-0 away to leaders Spartak Pleven and were therefore
relegated, despite their good results in spring.
