Universidad de San Martin de Porres - Real Garcilaso 2-1 in the second round of the Peruvian Clausura

Sunday, the 21st of July 2019, 11:15 local time (16:15 UTC), Estadio Alberto Gallardo, Lima, second round of Clausura, Liga 1 / Primera Division de Peru.
Both teams produced the biggest shocks of the first round of Clausura: Universidad de San Martin by winning away to Universidad Tecnica de Cajamarca and Real Garcilaso by losing at home to Pirata FC. In the second round, the good run continued for the home side and the bad run for Garcilaso.
Many expected Real Garcilaso to stand out, to try winning points. And just the game started, they scored: a long ball for Nunez, who headed over to Souza, and the Uruguayan winger ran better than his opponent on the right and scored from inside the area: 0-1! One of the fastest goals in history: only 16 seconds from the kick-off and the ball was in the net.

Unfortunately, this was the only good thing that one can say about Real Garcilaso in this game. Universidad de San Martin took full control of the game and attacked continuously. Although it seemed that their attacks were not really dangerous, in the end they succeeded to come back in the game due to big errors of Real Garcilaso defense. First, Miguez made an unnecessary foul on Gomez in the area, and Espinosa transformed the penalty: 1-1 (35').
Then, in the second half, when things seemed open to any result, Joao Ortiz lost a ball on the left in a bad moment when Real Garcilaso players were running for the counterattack, Espinosa crossed to Escobar who headed into the net from short range: 2-1 (63').
In the last 20 minutes or so, the visitors tried to equalize, but their efforts remained without result.
Universidad de San Martin: Penny - Salas (Escobar 7'), Lujan, Portales, Huerto - Afolabi, Delgado - Mora (Estrella 75'), Oliva, Gomez (Bolivar 79') - Espinosa. Head coach: Carlos Bustos.
Real Garcilaso: Ferreyra - Arismendi, Robles, Quina, Joao Ortiz - Miguez (Ramua 61') - Souza, Nunez (Rengifo 70'), Archimbaud, Guerrero (Goyoneche 46') - Carando. Head coach: Juan Reynoso.
Yellow cards: Delgado 73', Bolivar 90'+3' - Robles 66', Goyoneche 89'.
Referee: Joel Alarcon.
Real Garcilaso have no points after the first two rounds of the Clausura and they definitely need to rethink everything, because running for the title looks very much like a bad joke. Even the classification in the first eight of the aggregate table for a continental cup is in danger. Head coach Juan Reynoso changed almost the whole defensive line (with the exception of the goalkeeper and Quina) but to no avail, as two tremendous errors led to two goals. Otherwise, Universidad de San Martin did not have many goal-scoring opportunities.
The big problem for Real Garcilaso is however in the attack. The only player who is in a decent shape is Souza. Both strikers, Carando and Rengifo, are out of shape, and very much the same can be said about Ramua or Guerrero behind them. Nunez is on the field just for the minutes needed to be played by young players, but he assisted Souza for the only goal. Even if his natural position is defensive midfielder, Archimbaud is forced to play in the attack but his contribution there is low, although he had a couple of good passes and combinations, but was unable to score.
It is hard to say what can be done. Head coach Juan Reynoso, if remains in this position, has a very difficult mission. In the next round, Real Garcilaso will play at home against Carlos A. Mannucci. However, this match will be almost in one month from now, because the Peruvian Clausura is taking a break due to the Panamerican Games to be hosted by Lima. Actually, the next official match for Real Garcilaso will be between the 9th and 11th of August, when they will play away to FBC Melgar in the round of last 16 of the Copa Bicentenario.
