Competition details and format

The Bulgarian Treta Liga (also known as the Third Amateur Football League and formerly as V AFG) represents the third tier in the football system of Bulgaria and the highest level of amateur football in Bulgaria. In 2019-2020 there was the 70th season since the creation of the third level division in Bulgaria in 1950 and the fourth season under the name Treta Liga since the reorganization of the football leagues in Bulgaria in 2016.
There are 63 teams which compete in the Treta Liga in 2019-2020 and, just like in previous years, they are divided geographically into 4 groups: North-East (Severoiztochna, 14 teams), North-West (Severozapadna, 14 teams), South-West (Yugozapadna, 17 teams) and South-East (Yugoiztochna, 18 teams). Just like before, the competition format was established as a double (home and away) round-robin championship, each team playing all other teams twice, once at home and once away, a total of 34 rounds for the South-West and South-East groups and 26 rounds for the North-West Group and the North-East Group.
The first half of the season (rounds 1 to 13, 15 or 17) was played in summer and autumn, in the North-West Group from 11 August 2019 to 10 November 2019, while the second half of the season (rounds 14 or 16 to 26 or 18 to 34) was scheduled to be played in spring, from the end of February or March 2020 to the beginning of June 2020. Between the two halves of the season, there was a large winter break when transfers were allowed. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only one or two rounds were played in some of the groups at the end of February and the beginning of March. In the North-West Group, no matches were played in the second half of the season. The Bulgarian Football Union suspended all football matches on the 9th of March 2020. As the state of emergency continued, on the 21st of April 2020 it was decided to finish the season in all amateur football competitions in Bulgaria. The final tables were considered those at the moment of suspension (on the 9th of March), which for the North-West Group meant that the final table was the one at half-season. The first classified in each group of the Third League (Treta Liga) gained promotion to the Second League (Vtora Liga), with the exception of the South-West Group, where a play-off would be played between the top two teams to determine the one which promotes. No teams were relegated from the Third League to the regional (oblast) leagues. Promotion from the regional leagues to the Third League will probably be decided in summer. Initially, the worse classified teams would have been relegated to the regional (oblast) leagues at the end of the season, their number (usually two) depending on the group and circumstances.
The games in each group are organized by the four regional administrative football zone centres, belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU), based in Varna (North-East), Veliko Tarnovo (North-West), Sofia (South-West) and Plovdiv (South-East). Most of the matches were scheduled on Sunday afternoon. Very few games were played on Sunday morning, on Saturdays, Fridays and exceptionally on Mondays. There were a few mid-week rounds, when matches were played either Wednesday or Thursday.
Matches in the North-West (Severozapadna) Group were organized by the regional administrative football zone centre based in Veliko Tarnovo, belonging to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). This group consisted of teams located in the north-western part of Bulgaria, in the provinces of Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo and Veliko Tarnovo.
In the absence of any team relegated from Vtora Liga, the main contenders for promotion were Yantra 2019 Gabrovo, a team created in the summer of 2019 by a merger of Yantra Gabrovo, who finished second last season, and Yantra 1919 Gabrovo, winners of Gabrovo regional (oblast) league. This merger was meant to create a single strong team in Gabrovo to follow the traditions of the former Yantra Gabrovo which went bankrupt in 2012. Considering the last year results, FK Sevlievo¸ Vihar Slavyanovo and OFK Pavlikeni were also considered to have chances for promotion. In the first half of the season, Yantra 2019 Gabrovo fulfilled the expectations and classified on top of the table. However, they had only a few points ahead of FK Sevlievo and Vihar Slavyanovo, the teams which proved to be their stronger opponents for promotion. Partizan Cherven Bryag and OFK Pavlikeni also had a good first half of the season and classified in the upper part of the table. Due to the pandemic and the suspension of the football competitions in spring, Yantra 2019 Gabrovo promoted to the Second League (Vtora Liga), as the half-season table became final.
In the lower part of the table, the teams expected to be involved in the fight against relegation were Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo and OFK Tryavna, which just escaped last season, as well as the newly-promoted FK Drenovets and Juventus 95 Malchika. In the first half of the season, Juventus 95 Malchika became the main candidates for relegation as they were unable to win a single match and were last in the table throughout the season. Surprisingly, Bdin 1923 Vidin finished second to last after the first half and were strong candidates for relegation given their very weak results, especially after round 6. OFK Tryavna, Parva Atomna Kozloduy and Kom Berkovitsa were also involved in the lower part of the table, just above the relegation line. No teams were eventually relegated, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the suspension of the competition before the start of the second half of the season. Lokomotiv 1927 Dryanovo and FK Drenovets outperformed and classified in the middle, neutral part of the table.
