Saturday, the 10th of August 2019, 16:00 local time (21:00 UTC), Estadio Monumental de la UNSA, Arequipa, Peru, Copa Bicentenario - the round of last 16.
Only one match is to be played in order to establish the team qualified for the quarter-finals of Copa Bicentenario, a new Peruvian cup-type competition aimed only at professional teams in Liga 1 and Liga 2. According to the rules of the competition, the lower-ranked team will host the match, according to the rankings made public by the Peruvian Football Federation before the start of the competition. Therefore, FBC Melgar was the home side of this match, one of the most interesting in this round, as it represents the derby of South Peru, between the strongest teams of the moment in the rival cities of Arequipa (Melgar) and Cusco (Real Garcilaso). The winner will play in the quarter-finals against Academia Cantolao, which already won 3-2 at penalties (after a 3-3 draw) at home over Apertura winners Binacional.
FBC Melgar were favorites for playing at home and having a better period lately, while Real Garcilaso lost the first two matches of Clausura and were really under pressure to get a good result.
In the first half, Melgar was more in possession and attacked rather cautiously, rarely reaching the opponents' box. They tried to score mainly using long range shots and crosses inside the box, to no result. On the other hand, Real Garcilaso defended well and had one individual action on the counterattack by Cristian Souza, who was clearly pushed inside the box by Carmona. The same Souza executed the penalty: 0-1 (30').
In the second half, the home side increased its pressure and missed many opportunities, especially by means of Cuesta, Vidales and Villalba. Real Garcilaso defended again very well and in one of the few attacks they had, Miguez scored the second goal with a precise shot from inside the area, after a pass by Ormeno, who made his debut for the Cusco team with a great assist: 0-2 (84').

It looked that Real Garcilaso was going to win the match, but in the last minute of the game Miguez made an unnecessary foul on Cuesta inside his own area, and Vidales scored, although Ferreyra denied the penalty shot initially: 1-2 (90+1').
The referee granted six minutes of additional time, in which the home side really besieged the opponents' goal, but were unable to score further.
FBC Melgar: Caceda - Carmona (Arakaki 70'), Narvaez, Villalba, Gomez - Hinostroza, Tandazo (J. Sanchez 46'), Arias - Amoroso (Iberico 46'), Cuesta, Vidales. Head coach: Diego Osella.
Real Garcilaso: Ferreyra - Arismendi, Robles, Quina, Herrera - Miguez, Archimbaud - Souza, Nunez (Guerrero 61'), Joao Ortiz (Ismodes 68') - Carando (Ormeno 81'). Head coach: Juan Reynoso.
Referee: Augusto Menendez.
Yellow cards: Hinostroza (45'), Carmona (46'), Narvaez (61'), Cuesta (61'), Gomez (77') - Miguez (62'), Ferreyra (90+2').
Real Garcilaso continues its adventure in this Bicentenario Cup, where they won all matches so far - three in the group stage, and now this match in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, they will play again away, this time in Callao, against Academia Cantolao. The match is scheduled at the beginning of September.
Except for Herrera, unusually placed on the left, Juan Reynoso returned to the successful defensive line of the Apertura, with Robles and Quina as central backs, and they were among the best in this match. All the others played also very well, and Souza was again decisive in the attack. One may notice that three usual attacking players missed - Ramua, Rengifo and Lecaros, but their absence was not particularly noted.
Next week, the Peruvian Clausura resumes with the games of the third round. Real Garcilaso will play at home against Carlos A. Mannucci.
